The IDP Waiver Wire and Snap Watch: Week Two

Adam Tzikas

It’s no secret that most IDP leagues out there are going to be won or lost on the wire, so we are going to highlight a few players who are on the rise and might still be out there. If you are in a 70 man roster league, this likely isn’t the place for you except to glean some upcoming value and to see some trade targets before the owners get wise. Predominantly based on the snap counts received by players, this short list will hopefully give you some insight into who teams are starting to turn to on the defensive side of the ball.

Week two is in the books and it was an interesting one. A bit weak on the wire this week (especially at DE) as many of the big IDP plays were from those already on rosters in any real IDP league. We will do our best to highlight a few more players to keep that churn going at the bottom of your roster or to just keep filling up that watchlist.

Let’s check in with some adds from last week to see how they performed:

Robert Ayers: Re-aggrevated an ankle injury after 28 snaps and he is doubtful going forward. Look to Noah Spence to take a big leap in snaps

Danielle Hunter: Only played 41% of the snaps but recorded a sack, forced tackles and a forced fumbled rounding out a solid week.

Cassius Marsh: Didn’t record any stats in the game after only playing a couple snaps this week. Still a name to remember, but Cliff Avril and Frank Clark are the giants on the line in Seattle.

Will Compton: In 90% snaps, Compton dropped ten tackles onto the stat sheet.

Kwon Alexander: Kwon came back down to earth slightly with only six solos and another assist on the week. His compatriot Lavonte David had his first game with less than five tackles since he was a rookie, so this may be a strong floor for Kwon. Solid.

Manti Te’o: Quiet day for the backer while the Chargers got ahead early and the Jaguars kept the ball in the air, he recorded three solos and one assist.

James Bradberry: Still targeted heavily, he is coming around as a rookie corner and managed an interception and two solo tackles. Expect this to continue.

TJ McDonald: Oddly quiet on the day with only one tackle even though he played 100% of the snaps. I expect a big turnaround for the big hitting safety

Rodney McLeod: Rodney played 96% of the snaps and recorded 5 solo tackles

DL

Timmy Jernigan, BAL

43 snaps, 69%

Jernigan recorded at least a sack and two tackles in both games this year so he’s a name to remember after snagging four solos and two assists at Cleveland. The Ravens defensive line is looking for an identity and even as a DT, Jernigan could be finding his way there.

LB

Sio Moore, IND

59 Snaps, 83%

Moore surprised many with ten solos in week one and while he came back to earth in week two with only five solo tackles, he’s still a player who needs to be rostered in every almost format. That inside backer position is still wide open and the man to win it will have long term success.

Gerald Hodges, SF

56 Snaps 65%

After an injury to a much-added-by-me linebacker in Ray Ray Armstrong, Hodges stepped in to record a sack, two solos and eight assists. He should have an improved role going forward and his only competition is the much maligned Michael Wilhoite, who he already was beating out for snaps. He won’t win you your league but could be a solid play or excellent depth signing.

Craig Robertson, NO

79 Snaps, 100%

Well it seems like it’s undeniable that the time is neigh for a resurgence from Robertson. With the pre-season favorite Stephone Anthony seeing an extremely shocking 5% of the snaps this week, it seems like Robertson has be sucking them all up and all the tackles, 18 over the first two weeks, to boot.

DB

Bashaud Breeland, WAS

61 Snaps, 91%

If you didn’t get on the Breeland train last week, now is the time. With the island of Josh Norman beginning to be built, Breeland is the targeted man in Washington. The past two weeks he’s had 19 tackles and an interception. Expect this kind of production to continue and he’s my top add for the week.

Jalen Mills, PHI

43 Snaps, 83%

A slight homer pick here, the sixth round pick was pressed into service and asked to do crazy things like cover Alshon Jeffery and Kevin White, one on one. While he only had moderate success it was a chance for him to get targeted a ton and record six solo tackles. While Leodis McKelvin is sidelined, the converted safety could be a solid add, now and for the future.

Few more DB notes:

Something weird is going on in Cleveland (besides literally everything). Either Ibraheim Campbell was benched in favor of Derrick Kindred or he’s dealing with a pretty serious hamstring injury. It’s a situation to watch very closely and maybe an add in a deep league.

Keep an eye on Vonn Bell if he wasn’t drafted in your league, as he’s had only seven solo tackles on only 43% of the snaps. Kenny Vaccarro and Jairus Byrd have a knack for missing time.

With the a broken collarbone for one of my favorite IDP sleepers this year, Jahleel Addae, keep tabs on Dexter McCoil as he should see a massive increase in play time and ample opportunity for mop up work in San Diego, at least for the six-plus weeks Addae is meant to miss.
