The Devy Stock Market

Nathan Powell

The fantasy football stock market is constantly fluctuating, and it is always important for us to know which players have a price that has become exploitable, whether to buy or sell. Pieces like this one have been fairly commonplace in the industry for a while in both redraft and dynasty, but I will be focusing on college players for devy dynasty leagues and how their week-to-week performances are affecting their price in those leagues.

Studs Rebound from injury

Two of the top players in Devy fantasy football ended their 2015 seasons with significant injuries. Georgia Running Back Nick Chubb was a workhorse back the day he stepped on the Georgia campus, carrying the ball 219 times with a 7.1 yards per carry  and 14 touchdowns in his Freshman season. His Sophomore season ended after six games due to a significant left knee injury, but before the injury, he continued his success from his freshman season with 8.1 yards per carry on 92 carries. The question entering week one was: will Chubb be able to return to pre-injury form in 2016? Chubb answered that question with an emphatic yes, with 32 carries for 222 rushing yards and two touchdowns against North Carolina. Chubb was regarded as a top three consensus back before this performance, but personally, this gives him a chance to overtake Leonard Fournette in my rankings with a couple of more games like this.

The other Devy stud with injury concerns entering the 2016 season was Clemson wide receiver Mike Williams.  Williams missed all but one game during Clemson’s 2015 second place run with a neck injury. In his breakout sophomore season in 2014, Williams averaged 18.1 yards per catch with 1030 receiving yards on the season. Williams was one of the best big play threats in the nation and was considered a player who could’ve been a 2016 first round NFL draft pick before the injury. In week one against Auburn, Williams hauled in nine passes for 174 receiving yards, good for a yards per catch of 19.4. Neck injuries are always scary for football players, so it is good to see a big performance from Williams in his first game back. While the running backs are the talk of the town for the 2017 draft, Williams is one of three wide receivers (JuJu Smith-Schuster and Corey Davis) who are being heavily talked about as potential 2017 first round rookie picks in dynasty leagues.

Nick Chubb and Mike Williams are two examples of buy-highs in the event that any owners are still weary of the return from injury despite stellar week one performances.

Devy Riser Continues To Rise

It’s not everyday that a college player goes from virtual unknown to one of the hottest players in Devy leagues, but that is what happened to Courtland Sutton when fellow DLF’er Nick Whalen released his 2016 Devy Report. Sutton quickly became one of the most sought-after players in Devy Leagues and Sutton continued to prove Whalen right with four catches for 162 yards and three touchdowns. That’s right – 40.5 yards per catch, and he reached the end zone on three of his four touches against the University of North Texas.

Wait, Who?

It’s not every day that a New Mexico Lobos running back makes his way onto the Devy Stock Market. However, it’s not everyday that a running back averages 22.6 yards per carry in a game. Lobos running back Teriyon Gipson had eight carries for 181 rushing yards and two touchdowns in week one against in-state rival New Mexico State. Gipson doesn’t have prototypical NFL size at 5’8” 182 lbs, but if he continues to perform like he did in week one, we could see him as a nice scat back in the NFL as early as 2017.

Stock Down, Then Up

Deondre Francois didn’t have the most stellar start to his first career game in college football. The Redshirt Freshman had led the Seminoles to a 28-6 deficit just before the final moments in the first half. Francois threw a touchdown pass to get closer with a 28-13 halftime score. After halftime, Francois led the Seminoles to a comeback, finishing with a line of 33-52 for 419 passing yards and two touchdowns in a 45-34 win over Ole Miss. This is a promising start for a young quarterback and he should be on the radar of all Devy Superflex players.

Rocky Start for Rosen

Josh Rosen was one of the most-hyped players in Devy leagues during the 2016 off-season, and for good reason as he threw for 3669 passing yards with 23 touchdowns and 11 interceptions as true Freshman. In the first game in his Sophomore season, Rosen showed shades of a Christian Hackenberg-like regression as he completed only 26/46 passes with three interceptions in a loss against Texas A&M. If any Devy players with Rosen are panicking after the sub-par performance, I think this is a good opportunity to buy low on Rosen who I still think is locked in as a top two devy quarterback.
