Pac-12
Premier Conference Performer
Jared Goff QB, California (Junior)
26/37 passing, 453 yards, six touchdowns vs. Oregon State
After losing their last four games, Jared Goff set the ship straight when he threw for the most touchdowns and yards this season against Oregon State. His only blemish was one interception. He has not been able to shake the turnover bug in his last three games. He completed 70.3 percent of his passes on his way to 453 yards and six touchdowns. He hit Kenny Lawler for the first score, and then Tre Watson for a 45-yard touchdown. The second half was all him. Goff threw for three scores in the third quarter. Darius Powe scored from 19 yards, and then Maurice Harris was good from 13 and four-yards out. Then Goff finished the scoring when he hit Malik McMorris from 11 yards for the 54-24 lead and game final score. On the season, Goff has 3,319 passing yards with 30 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. They have Stanford and Arizona State left on their schedule.
Rising Players
Cody Kessler QB, USC (Senior)
17/27 passing, 204 passing yards, three touchdowns, one interception, 149 yards vs. Colorado
Cody Kessler kept the Trojans rolling with his three touchdowns against Colorado. USC has now won four games in a row and now stand at 7-3 on the season. Kessler completed 63 percent of his passes and finished with a 155.7 passer rating. His three touchdowns went to three different receivers. His first two scores were short passes. In the third quarter, he hit Jahleel Pinner from four yards, and then Taylor McNamara from 2 yards out. His last touchdown went to JuJu Schuster from 36 yards. On the season, Cody Kessler has 2,715 yards passing with 23 touchdowns and just six interceptions. The Trojans will now face Oregon on the road then UCLA at home.
Christian McCaffrey RB, Stanford (Sophomore)
33 carries, 147 yards, one touchdown vs. Oregon
Losing to Oregon was a heart breaker for the Cardinals. They hadn’t lost since the first game of the season to Northwestern and won eight straight games pushing their ranking up to #7 in the nation. They were down 35-23 to the start the fourth quarter and climbed within two before the two-point conversion failed and ended the game. McCaffrey scored from 11 yards out in the second quarter to put the Cardinals up by three. On the season, McCaffrey has 1,354 yards rushing on 231 rushing attempts and seven touchdowns, with 33 receptions 228 yards and two touchdowns. He is having a great year and is only a sophomore. Stanford will have their next two games at home. First up is Cal then Notre Dame to finish out the regular season.
Jordan Payton WR, UCLA (Senior)
Seven catches, 163 yards, three touchdowns vs. Ball State
Payton went out and his biggest reception and yardage day on the season. His 14 receptions for 152 yards were top notch for the Pac-12, but the win is what UCLA needed against Washington State. The loss broke the three-game winning streak the Bruins were on, and now UCLA has lost three games in the year. The only thing missing on Payton’s day was a touchdown, something he hasn’t done in the last four games. In fact, he has only four touchdowns in the season, even though he has caught 64 passes for 904-yards. UCLA will go on the road for their last two games. First will be against Utah and then finish up the regular season against USC.
Falling
Jake Browning QB, Washington (Freshman)
28/52 passing, 405 yards, one touchdown, three interceptions vs. Arizona State
Browning had a solid day passing the ball as he threw for 405 yards on 28 of 52 passing. His biggest downfall came with the interceptions. The three he threw made a large difference in the 10-point loss the Huskies suffered. It was the most turnovers he has given up all season. Browning did throw for one touchdown in the second quarter. On the season, Browning has 12 touchdowns with nine interceptions, not the greatest ratio, but he is just a freshman. Washington will take on Oregon State on the road and then Washington State at home for the final regular season game.
Demario Richard RB, Arizona State (Sophomore)
14 carries, 45 yards, zero touchdowns vs. Washington
Demario Richard probably had his worst performance of the season. His 45 yards on 14 rushes only allowed him to have 3.2 yards per carry. His longest rush of the day was just six yards, and he didn’t score a touchdown. On top of that he didn’t catch a pass, something he has done only twice before facing Washington. In the end, Arizona State pulled out the victory, but it the Sun Devils other running back Kalen Ballage and his two touchdowns showed up more than Richard did. On the season, Richard has 820 yards on 152 attempts with six touchdowns, to go along with 26 receptions for 265 yards and three touchdowns. Arizona State will take on rival Arizona at home before finishing up the regular season at Cal.
Devon Cajuste WR, Stanford (Senior)
Two catches, 37 yards, zero touchdowns vs. Oregon
Devon Cajuste has taken a back step from his junior season. In that season, he had 30 receptions for 505-yards and four touchdowns. In the Foster Farms Bowl, he caught four passes for 47-yards and two touchdowns, this season he has 18 receptions for 214 yards and two touchdowns. He has the size and build (6-foot-4 227 pounds) to be a solid receiver in the pro’s, but he needs to step up his game down the stretch. In the loss against Oregon, the Cardinals put up 36 points, Cajuste’s contribution was just two receptions for 37 yards and no touchdowns. The Cardinals will have their last two games of the regular season at home. They face Cal next week and then Notre Dame to close it out.
Freshman Spotlight
Myles Gaskin RB, Washington
18 carries, 108 yards, one touchdown vs. Arizona State
One freshman was a dud (Jake Browning) while this freshman was a stud against Arizona State. His 108 yards on just 18 carries put him at 6.0 yards per carry average, even though nearly half his total yards were on his long run of 53 yards. The remaining left him with 17 carries for 55 yards for a 3.2 yards per carry average, or mediocre. Even so, Gaskin is someone you want to keep your eyes on to see how he progresses. His 856 yards on 146 attempts has shown he is consistent while he has also scored eight times in 10 games. He doesn’t catch the ball much if at all, only five receptions this season. He rushed for a one-yard score, but his 53-yard run was a highlight. Check it here http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=espn:14128759
Nation
Premier Nation Performer
Zach Greenlee QB, (Sophomore) Fresno State
20/35 passing, 285 yards, six touchdowns, zero interceptions vs. Hawaii
Zach Greenlee is back from injury and showed no wear facing Hawaii on the road. He completed 57.1 percent of his passes for 285 yards and six touchdowns. He had seven total touchdowns before his start against the Rainbow Warriors. Greenlee hit five different receivers for scores, including two of them to De’Mari Scott. He also was able to get Jamie Jordan, Chad Olsen, Martez Walker, and Josiah Blandin involved.
Rising Players
Keenan Reynolds QB, Navy (Senior)
2/9 passing, 81 yards, one touchdown, 14 carries, 137 yards, four touchdowns vs. SMU
Navy runs a triple-option offense. This schematic tries to isolate individual defenders and to try to force the defense always to be outnumbered. They set in primarily a wishbone offense. With the running back and fullback behind Reynolds to go along with two slot backs that line up behind the tackles. In this formation Reynolds will have three options; he can hand the ball off to the fullback, keep the ball himself or pitch it to one of the slot backs. Depending on the defense alignment Reynolds will make his decision.
Because of the triple option the quarterback will rarely throw the ball which is why Reynolds numbers are so very low, and his running attempts are extremely high for a quarterback. On the season and nine games in, Reynolds has only attempted 65 passes or just a little more than eight per game. His running attempts are up to 182 for the season, or 20 per game. He had his biggest yards per carry average all season as he ran for 9.8 yards per attempt and scored four times, he also threw for one touchdown. He hit Jamir Tillman for 72 yards. Navy will travel to face Tulsa next week before their big matchup against the No. 24 ranked Houston Cougars also on the road.
Travis Greene RB, Bowling Green (Senior)
24 carries, 170 yards, three touchdowns, six catches vs. Western Michigan
Greene put on a show against Bowling Green in their stadium. He matched his previous high of three touchdowns that he put up against Ohio last week but had his most rushing yards all season with 170. He did it all game long as his longest run was 26 yards, so he finished with 23 carries for 144 yards when his longest run is deducted. He took two to the house from 26 and 24 yards out and added a five-yard run to put the game out of reach for the Broncos. On the season, he has 866 yards on just 149 attempts or a 5.8 yards rushing per average. Bowling Green will take on Toledo at home for first place in the conference and then on to Ball State for their last game of the regular season.
Shane Harrison WR, Sacramento State (Senior)
11 catches, 152 yards, three touchdowns vs. Northern Arizona
The senior has been on fire for the last three weeks catching 31 passes for 431-yards and seven touchdowns. He had his biggest yardage day against Northern Arizona with 152 yards on 11 receptions including three touchdowns. He caught a 20 and 13 yarder for scores, and then a two-yard reception all from Nate Ketteringham. On the season, he has 62 receptions for 804-yards and seven touchdowns.
Falling Players
Cameron Coffman QB, Wyoming (Senior)
9/21 passing, 129 passing yards, zero touchdowns, two interceptions vs. San Diego State
San Diego State shut down the offense of Wyoming. Coffman was only successful on 43 percent of his passes, and his nine completions went for 129 yards and no touchdowns. However, he did throw three interceptions, which put his quarterback rating at a dismal 75.4 his lowest on the season. Wyoming has only won once all season and is currently on a four-game losing streak. They will face UNLV for their last game of the season.
Xavier Jones RB, SMU (Freshman)
Eight carries, 45 yards, zero touchdowns vs. Navy
The Navy defense didn’t allow much of a running or a passing game from SMU. Jones ran 45-yards on eight carries that are solid until you notice that his long was 22 yards. Jones seven other carries went for 23 yards total. Jones has shown some good skills for a freshman, as he has 523 total yards rushing with seven touchdowns on 125 attempts, he also has nice hands catching 25 balls for 175 yards. The Mustangs have only won just one game all season and have lost nine straight games, and will finish the season off with Tulane at home then on to No. 21 Memphis for the last game of the year.
Thomas Owens WR, Florida International (Sophomore)
Zero catches, Zero yards, zero touchdowns vs. Marshall
Yikes! Thomas Owens and the rest of the Florida International Panthers decided not to show up against Marshall. The final score tells it all, 52-0. Owens is the leading receiver for the Panthers, and he brought home a goose-egg like the rest of the team. On the season, Thomas Owens has 49 receptions for 620 yards and eight touchdowns. The Panthers will take on Western Kentucky in their final season game at home.
Freshman Spotlight
Chase Litton QB, Marshall
16/23 passing, 169 yards, three touchdowns vs. Florida International
Chase Litton lit up the Florida International Panthers as he threw for 169 yards and three touchdowns. He was also good on 69.6 percent of his passes for a 174.3 quarterback rating. Litton was good for scores with three different receivers. Deandre Reaves, Justin Hunt, and Ryan Yurachek were the beneficiaries of those passes from Litton. His first touchdown pass came on a 7-yard pass to Hunt in the first quarter, and he followed that up with a scoring pass from 3-yards to Yuracheck in the second quarter. His last touchdown came in the third quarter to make the score 45-0 when he found Deandre Reeves from 10 yards. Chase Litton has had a successful season, throwing 20 touchdowns with just five interceptions and 2,160 yards. The Thundering Herd have only lost twice on the season to Ohio, but Litton was not the quarterback at the time, however, he was for the loss to Middle Tennessee in three overtimes. Marshall will take to the road and Western Kentucky in two weeks for first place in their division and the last game of the season.
