All About the Solo: Week Nine

One of the more frustrating things in IDP leagues is seeing your stud linebacker fly all over the field on game days only to see the home score keeper dilute his performance by divvying up his tackles as an assist. On the flip side, if your league doesn’t score solos and assists too differently, you’ll have a better idea of what teams hand out assists like candy. Not everyone knows this, but the NFL does not recognize a tackle as an official statistic. Tackles are scored by the home team’s official score keeper and those are the stats you see on the news and websites. The league made an effort to standardize what is and isn’t a solo tackle back in 2007 when they sent a video to all NFL teams, but it still the discretion of the score keeper. There is a still a large discrepancy from team to team and week-to-week. I will be tracking this throughout the season to give you a better idea of what to expect when choosing your IDPs each week.

This week saw seven defensive backs rack up double digit tackles, a direct result of what this game has become. A total of 22 quarterbacks attempted at least 30 passes in week nine. With most IDP leagues now requiring at least one starting cornerback spot, the days of the cornerback position being a weekly punt could be over.

Another oddity from week nine was the lack of the usual suspects among the weekly leaders. Luke Kuechly, Paul Posluszny and Reshad Jones have been on the leader board almost every week.

We also lost Jordan Hicks for the rest of the season last week with a torn pectoral. He was having a much better rookie season than anyone had anticipated, including the Eagles. With Kiko Alonso eternally banged up, DeMeco Ryans being a shell of his former self and Mychal Kendricks missing time, it was Hicks who has called the plays for Chip Kelly’s defense. Week 10 was looking like the week all four would be healthy and it was pretty confusing and scary for IDP leaguers to figure out who in the heck was going to get the playing time or if they would all cannibalize each other. Now with the biggest cog in the machine out of the equation, it’ll be Kendricks who takes back over as the defensive leader. Expect Ryans to be a two down player with Alonso coming in on passing downs.
