Dynasty Scouts Conference Reviews: Pac-12 and Around the Country
With college football in full swing, we’ll be bringing you a review each and every week. These recaps will feature sections for “Premier Conference Performer,” “Rising Players,” “Falling Players” and a special Freshman spotlight. These weekly reviews will keep you up-to-date on all the happenings in devy leagues and allow you to keep tabs on future dynasty league assets. By the time the NFL Draft rolls around, you won’t see too many strangers.
PAC-12
Premier Conference Performer
Luke Falk, QB Washington State (Sophomore)
47/62 passing, 514 yards, five touchdowns, nine carries 16 yards vs. Arizona
Falk has made the Premier Conference Performer two weeks in a row. It took almost all of his 514 yards to defeat Arizona in a shootout in the desert this week. Four of Falk’s touchdowns went to Gabe Marks, the longest being a 43-yard touchdown pass. Marks did most of the work as he received a screen pass and took down the right sidelines. On the first score, Falk hit Marks for a four-yard screen pass. Falk hit Kyrin Priester for a touchdown as well. The spotlight is turning toward the sophomore from Logan, Utah. On the season, Falk has 2,885 yards passing with 26 touchdowns and just four interceptions. Washington State has now won four games in a row and will be home for their next two games – first against #8 Stanford and then Arizona State.
Rising Players
Kevin Hogan, QB Stanford (Senior)
17/24 passing, 290 yards, two touchdowns, one interception, eight carries, 37 yards vs. Washington

The Cardinals were led by Kevin Hogan at the helm as he tossed two touchdowns and threw for 290 yards. His first touchdown was a 21-yard pass to tight end, Austin Hooper. Hogan’s second touchdown was on a play action fake and he hit Christian McCaffrey 20 yards downfield and McCaffrey did the rest as he jogged it in with no defenders around him. Hogan has 1,576 yards passing with 14 touchdowns and only four interceptions on the season. The Cardinal have not lost since week one against Northwestern as they’ve now winning six straight. They are currently ranked #10 in the nation and will go on the road to face Washington State and then Colorado.
Christian McCaffrey, RB Stanford (Sophomore)
23 carries 109 yards, one touchdown, five catches, 112 yards, one touchdown vs. Washington
McCaffrey makes the rising list for two straight weeks. He has been nearly unstoppable, this time taking 109 yards on 23 carries, averaging 4.7 yards a rush and scoring once. He also caught five passes for 112 yards and a touchdown. Stanford dominated the whole game with Hogan managing and McCaffery dominating. He scored his first touchdown from seven yards out. He took the handoff swung to the left side of the field, followed a few blockers, then slammed himself into a couple defenders driving himself into the end zone. His second touchdown was on a Hogan play action fake and being uncovered, Hogan found him open about 20-yards down the field, and McCaffrey did the rest for a 50-yard touchdown. On the season, McCaffrey has 153 attempts for 953 yards and six touchdowns. He also has 21 receptions for 284 yards and two touchdowns.
Gabe Marks, WR Washington State (Junior)
Eight catches, 97 yards, four touchdowns vs. Arizona
Gabe Marks continues to be a steady force in the Washington State offense. Marks is making his second straight appearance on the rising list, as he and Luke Falk are making the Washington State Cougars a deadly offense. Marks scored the first two touchdowns of the game, one being from 43-yards out. He got his third touchdown in the middle of the second quarter, and his last was late in the fourth quarter, to put the Cougars up for good. On the season, Marks has 57 receptions for 717-yards and ten touchdowns. Let’s see if Falk and Marks make the list for the third straight time next week.
Falling Players
Travis Wilson, QB Utah (Senior)
24/36 passing, 254 passing yards, two touchdowns, four interceptions, 13 carries, 35 yards vs. USC
#3 Utah and Travis Wilson went to Los Angeles to take on the unranked USC Trojans and got ran over. He only threw for 254 yards and was picked four times. Other than the interceptions, Wilson was accurate as he had a 66.7 percent completion rate. On the season, he has 1,234 yards passing with nine touchdowns and seven interceptions. Utah will try to bounce back as they take on Oregon State at home then travel to Washington.
Devontae Booker, RB Utah (Senior)
14 carries, 62 yards, zero touchdowns, six receptions, 49 yards vs. USC
It was not all on Travis Wilson since Devontae Booker didn’t do much against the USC Trojans, either. Booker had four of five games where he rushed for over 100 yards and one where he went for 222 yards. He also had scored two touchdowns in each of his last two games as well. Obviously, the Trojans had other plans for Booker. His 4.4 yards per carry average was solid, he just couldn’t make it impactful. His six receptions for 49 yards were also good, but again it didn’t turn into any points. On the season, Booker has 175 attempts for 845 yards and eight touchdowns on the season. He also has 29 receptions for 257 yards.
Jordan Villamin, WR Oregon State (Sophomore)
Four catches, 65 yards, zero touchdowns vs. Colorado
Colorado put a stranglehold on Villamin has he could find very little space. His four receptions for 65 yards and zero touchdowns didn’t help Oregon State overcome the Buffaloes in a low scoring game (17-13). Villamin has had an up and down season, but when the Beavers needed him most, he came up short this week. On the season, Villamin has 26 receptions for 380 yards and four touchdowns. The Beavers now have four straight losses and will look to bounce back against #13 Utah in Provo, then at home against the #24 UCLA Bruins.
Freshman Spotlight
Josh Rosen, QB UCLA
34/47 passing, 399 yards, three touchdowns, three carries, eight yards vs. California
The UCLA Bruins were reeling after losing two straight games and had a big test against the #20 ranked Cal Bears. Rosen and the Bruins passed with flying colors. He completed 72.3 percent of his passes for 399 yards and three touchdowns. The 399 yards was the most on the season for Rosen and his three touchdowns tied a season best. Josh Rosen now has been the freshman performer two weeks in a row. In back-to-back weeks, he has thrown for three touchdown passes, and he hasn’t thrown for less than two since week three against BYU. His first touchdown came at the end of the first quarter as he hit Thomas Durate from seven yards out. His second touchdown came on a remarkable pass and catch from one-yard out to Kenny Lawler. You can view it here. His third was a 21-yard strike to the right side of the end zone to put the game out of reach for Cal. Rosen has 1,968 yards passing to go along with 15 touchdowns and seven interceptions. At this point, he is the obvious freshman of the year for the Pac-12 and perhaps the nation. UCLA will now play USC and Oregon State at home.

Premier Nation Performer
Paxton Lynch, QB Memphis (Junior)
32/44 passing, 447 yards, four touchdowns, no interceptions, two rushes, six yards, one touchdown vs. Tulsa
Paxton Lynch kept the Memphis undefeated streak alive by passing for 447-yards and four touchdowns. He even ran for a score. The junior has 2,366 yards passing on the season with 17 touchdowns and just one interception. His longest touchdown was a 45-yard strike off a play action pass. He also hit Tevin Jones for two touchdowns and Jamarius Henderson on a 21-yard touchdown. Memphis will stay at home over the next two weeks taking on Tulane and then Navy.
Rising
Phillip Ely, QB Toledo (Senior)
26/47 passing, 355 passing yards, five touchdowns, three interceptions, one carry, six yards vs. Massachusetts
Ely kept Toledo undefeated with his five touchdowns and 355 yards. He had his most touchdowns this season, but also the most interceptions. He has been prone to turnovers as he has seven interceptions on the season in seven games. He also had the most yards passing – his previous best was 327 yards. Four of his five touchdowns came in the second half as he rallied the Rockets back from 18-point deficit at half-time. Ely hit Cody Thompson twice for scores, Alonzo Russell, Corey Jones, and Michael Roberts each had one. The Rockets have Northern Illinois at home next week, then go on the road to face Central Michigan.
Kenneth Farrow, RB Houston (Senior)
13 carries, 167 yards, three touchdowns, one catch, 28 yards, zero touchdowns vs. UCF
Farrow outscored the UCF Knights all by himself. His first score came on a 26-yard touchdown run. His second touchdown came on the opening drive of the second half, where he busted up the middle, untouched for a 30-yard run. His last touchdown put the game out of reach when he tried to take the hand-off and go up the middle, but bounced it to the left side and took it for the score after breaking a few bad tackles. Farrow had his biggest day as he equaled his touchdown mark and had the most yards on the season. He now has 559 rushing yards on 112 attempts to go along with eight touchdowns. The undefeated Cougars face off against Vanderbilt and Cincinnati in the next two weeks at home.
Keyarris Garrett, WR Tulsa (Senior)
14 catches, 268 yards, three touchdowns vs. Memphis
You can’t put this loss on Garrett as he did his part in blowing up the Memphis secondary. His 14 catches for 268 yards and three touchdowns just wasn’t enough for the Golden Hurricane of Tulsa. On the season, Garrett has 59 receptions for 966 yards and five touchdowns. Against Memphis he scored his first touchdown came on a 36-yard reception, as he blew past the coverage and Dane Evans found him alone on the right side of the field. His second came on a Hail Mary pass at the end of the half from 46 yards out. You can see it here. Garrett’s third score came on a 32-yard strike from Evans hitting him in the end zone. Tulsa will now face SMU on the road and then UCF at home.
Falling
Kilton Anderson, QB Fresno State (Freshman)
14/39 passing, 177 passing yards, no passing touchdowns, one interception vs. Air Force
In his fourth game (but third start), Anderson struggled with the defense of Air Force. He struggled with his accuracy as well (he completed just 35.9 percent of his passes, after completing 61.3 and 50 percent in his last two games). He normally has reliable feet to get yardage with his legs, but the Falcons bottled him up there, too. On the season, Anderson now has 482 yards passing with just one touchdown and four interceptions. Perhaps the freshman quarterback needs some bench time. The Bulldogs will now face Nevada at home and then on the road to beautiful Hawaii.
Martez Walker, RB Central Michigan (Senior)
19 carries, 86 yards, zero touchdowns, four catches, 52 yards, zero touchdowns vs. Ball State
When looking at Martez Walker’s overall numbers, they appear pretty good. Having 86-yards on 19 attempts is a solid 4.5 yards per carry average (ypc). The only issue is that he busted one run for 45 yards. Walker with his remaining 18 carries for 41-yards or a measly 2.2 ypc. The running game has struggled all season, and Walker is the main cog. He has 75 attempts for 237 yards and just two touchdowns. He doesn’t do much on the receiving end either, only 12 receptions this season. Central Michigan will take their two-game winning streak on the road against Akron then at home against #20 Toledo.
Zach Pascal, WR Old Dominion (Senior)
Two catches, 12 yards, zero touchdowns, one carry, 75 yards, one touchdown, 1/1 passing, 47 yards vs. Florida International
Pascal made my rising portion of this list last week. It’s never a good sign to go from rising to falling in one week. Pascal couldn’t open himself up to David Washington, who had a good day at quarterback. Pascal finished with just 12 yards on two receptions on the day – all this after catching 11 balls for 231 yards and three touchdowns. There is no denying Pascal is talented. He ran for a 75-yard touchdown and completed his only passing attempt for 47-yards. On the season, Pascal has 27 receptions for 367 yards and three touchdowns. Old Dominion will take on Western Kentucky at home and Texas-San Antonio on the road.
Freshman Spotlight
Tanner Magnum, QB BYU
12/13 passing, 237 yards, three touchdowns, zero interceptions, 11 carries, 78 yards, two touchdowns vs. UNLV
Taking on the Wagner Seahawks (who have not won a game and are dead last in the Northeast Conference) leads to blowout situations and that’s what Tanner Magnum did. The final score was 70-6. Magnum did all his damage in the first half and it didn’t take long for him to get pulled. His first score was a 16-yard pass to Colby Pearson, his next two touchdowns went to Mitch Matthews from 20 and 19-yards out. Magnum on the season has 1,905-yards with 14 touchdowns and just six interceptions. BYU will take their four-game winning streak to San Jose State and then are at home against Missouri.
