The Dynasty Aftermath: Week Twelve

Welcome to DLF’s Dynasty Aftermath. This Tuesday staple is our longest running signature piece as we have a little fun after a tough week at the Dynasty League Football office. You’ll find this article will review the week’s happenings in a variety of ways and help set you up for the coming weeks as we spin around the league in the way we know best. This week featured some explosive performances, but will most be remembered for one of the most amazing catches any of us will ever see.

Let’s take a look back at the week that was!

Week Twelve Fantasy MVP

I rarely (if ever) choose two players as Co-MVPs, but I just have no choice this week as I have to give props to both Odell Beckham, Jr. and Justin Forsett.

While most people will focus on the catch featured in the image above, that doesn’t come close to telling the whole story. Beckham was simply fantastic against the Cowboys with ten catches for 146 yards and two touchdowns. He started off slowly with the hamstring issues this season, but patient dynasty owners now have a legitimate WR1 on their hands. He’s a great route runner, has serious athletic ability and looks to be a long-term beast in New York. This year’s draft class of receivers is destined to go down as one of the best ever and Beckham is going to be right at the top of the list.

“He’s too small.” “He can’t hold up.” “He’s nothing special.” “Career backup.” Before the season, that’s likely what Justin Forsett was tired of hearing. After Ray Rice was suspended, owners rushed to grab Lorenzo Taliaferro and Bernard Pierce as his replacement, while Forsett was given little to no attention.

That now looks like a huge mistake.

There’s an idea that “fit” can be just as important as “talent” (ask Pierre Garcon) and Forsett fits the Ravens’ offensive system like a glove. Forsett had shown flashes of ability in Seattle, Houston and Jacksonville, but nobody could have expected this outburst. After a dominating 182-yard, two touchdown performance against the Saints, he has now posted 903 yards on just 155 carries (good for a robust 5.8 yards per carry average) and has seven rushing touchdowns on the season. When you add in his 33 catches and 210 receiving yards, you have a RB1 for the stretch run.

Forsett’s long-term value is debatable (he’s 29 years old), but the Ravens are going to be very hard pressed to find a running back who is going to be able to produce numbers like he has this year. If anything, it’s safe to say they won’t be able to bring him back on a modest one-year, $730,000 contract like he signed before the season as a street free agent.

Week Twelve Fantasy LVP

The prevailing thought in dynasty circles was Cecil Shorts being a fairly safe play moving forward now that Allen Robinson is out for the year.

Uhh, not so much.

Shorts was healthy this week, but posted a thoroughly disappointing one catch for just six yards against the Colts. Trusting anyone on the Jacksonville roster is going to be ill-advised until they can get things figured out.

Lineup Fun

The unbeatable lineup of the week…

QB Peyton Manning DEN = 257 passing yards, four touchdowns
RB Justin Forsett BAL = 182 rushing yards, two catches, eight receiving yards, two touchdowns

The dominant underdog lineup of the week…

QB Zach Mettenberger TEN  345 passing yards, two touchdowns, one INT
RB Latavius Murray OAK =
112 rushing yards, two touchdowns (on just four carries)

The unexpectedly horrible lineup of the week…

Gut Checks

I’d be worried if I’m relying on anyone on the Jets.

I’d be worried if I thought Josh Gordon was going to be “eased in.”

I’d be worried if I was still expecting something from Dwayne Bowe.

I’d be worried if I owned Jake Locker. Zach Mettenberger has looked pretty good thus far.

I’d be worried if I didn’t cash out on Jonas Gray.

I’d be worried if I was counting on Andre Johnson.

Ditto on Matt Stafford.

And Reggie Wayne.

I’d be worried if I owned any Rams running back outside of Tre Mason.

I’d be worried if I had given up on Roddy White.

I’d be worried if owned Adrian Peterson. It’s just a fact – nobody knows what’s going to happen here.

I’d be worried if I hadn’t noticed major improvement from Ryan Tannehill.

I’d be worried if I was playing Steven Jackson in anything but a TD league.

I’d be worried if I thought Knile Davis was going to be flex worthy when Jamaal Charles is healthy.

I’d be worried if I wasn’t looking to buy on Charles Sims.

I’d be worried if I wasn’t thankful for garbage time. Ask the owners of James Jones.

I’d be worried if I owned Ryan Mallett. His film from the season isn’t going to look good and he’ll have to wait (again) for another opportunity.

I’d be worried if I owned Cordarrelle Patterson.  Did I even need to say it?

I’d be worried if owned Trent Richardson. It’s just fun to say it.

I’d be worried if hadn’t cut Michael Vick yet.

I’d be worried if I thought Joe Morgan was going to do that every week.

I’d be worried if I owned anyone on the Redskins outside of Alfred Morris.

I’d be worried if I owned Victor Cruz. There’s a new Sheriff in town and he goes by OBJ.

I’d be worried if owned any Broncos running back outside of CJ Anderson – it looks like we may just have our winner.

I’d be worried if I owned Johnny Manziel.   Just sayin’.

A Look Ahead to Hot Names on the Week Thirteen Waiver Wire
Remember, we focus on the lesser names here who we haven’t mentioned much this season.

1. Duron Carter WR FA

The son of Hall of Famer Cris Carter has loads of talent, but has been playing in the CFL this year to essentially work through his problems. Consult your league’s rule book, but if you can pick him up, it could be a worthy add.  We’ll have much more on Carter later.

2. Charles Johnson, WR MIN

Make sure you don’t accidentally pick up the DL from Carolina here. The Charles Johnson you want is the one who was cut by the Packers and Browns, but now is working his way into some meaningful playing time in Minnesota.

3. Glenn Winston, RB CLE

Yes, it looks like Isaiah Crowell and Terrance West are far ahead of Winston. However, the Browns are said to really like him and things are far from settled long-term in this backfield. He’s worth a dart throw.

4. Tom Savage, QB HOU

The Texans will likely turn back to Ryan Fitzpatrick, but Savage could get a chance if and when Houston is eliminated from playoff contention.

5. Zurlon Tipton, RB IND

A running back on the Colts is a running back on my roster.

6. Jeremy Stewart, RB DEN

Ditto for the Broncos.

Previous suggestions: Justin Forsett, Lorenzo Taliaferro, Bobby Rainey, Anthony Dixon, Case Keenum, Alfred Blue, Knile Davis, Donald Brown, Khiry Robinson, Kirk Cousins, Jarvis Landry, Aaron Dobson, Niles Paul, Damien Williams, Austin Davis, Zach Mettenberger, Joe Banyard, Silas Redd, DeAndre Levy, Mike Glennon, Joe McKnight, Philly Brown, Rhett Ellison, Jerick McKinnon, Darrin Reaves, Branden Oliver, Jarius Wright, Louis Murphy, Kyle Orton, Juwan Thompson, Tim Wright, George Winn, Robert Herron, Adam Thielen, James White, Chris Hogan, Preston Parker, Jonas Gray, Colt McCoy, Bryce Brown, Marion Grice, Ryan Mallett, Charles Sims, Brandon Weeden, Kamar Aiken, Michael Vick, Dan “Boom” Herron, Mark Sanchez, Chase Ford, Matt Simms, Ryan Williams, Logan Thomas, Drew Stanton, Josh McCown, Kapri Bibbs, Marcedes Lewis, Antonio Andrews.
