Monday Morning Hangover: Week Fourteen

Every Sunday we’re featuring the Sunday Six Pack that covers the day’s biggest storylines. We follow this up each and every Monday with The Monday Morning Hangover, which looks back on those stories and covers what we learned. These back-to-back articles are sure to get you primed, pumped and informed throughout the entire season. In addition, reading these articles will ensure you understand the dangers of not paying attention or drinking too much on Sundays.

Can #1) Flynn Again

Matt Flynn was able to guide the Packers to a much needed victory over the Falcons and helped keep their playoff dreams alive in the process. He wasn’t great as he threw for just 258 yards, with one touchdown, one interception and a lost fumble, but it was good enough to get a win.

More importantly, the tow big-time fantasy contributors from the pool of Packers skill position players didn’t completely tank as Jordy Nelson (four catches for 85 yards) and Eddie Lacy (65 rushing yards, 25 receiving yards, one touchdown) were able to post decent afternoons.

The seat has been kept warm for Aaron Rodgers and the results haven’t been pretty – let’s hope he makes it back for this week’s game.

Can #2) Purple Party

The Ravens and Vikings played in a bit of a snowy snoozefest until the fourth quarter came around and saw them post an NFL record six lead changes in the final quarter (including five in the last three minutes), highlighted by the game winning touchdown catch from Marlon Brown of the Ravens.

What could be lost in the chaos of that final quarter is the emergence of rookie Cordarrelle Patterson, who had five catches for 141 yards and what looked to be the game winning touchdown. Patterson has really come on and looks to be making good on his massive, albeit raw, potential. With his elite special teams ability and a blossoming skill set on offense, Patterson looks to be the long-term replacement for Percy Harvin in Minnesota.

Can #3) Peyton’s Merry-Go-Round

It’s kind of scary, really.

It seems that Peyton Manning can simply do no wrong. It was just another day at the office as the Br0ncos put up 51 points on the Tennessee Titans, who actually played pretty well for most of the day. This week, the merry-go-round stopped spinning as Manning spread the wealth as only he can.

All the usual suspects put up solid numbers as Manning (397 yards and four touchdowns), Eric Decker (eight catches for 117 and one touchdown), Knowshon Moreno (78 rushing yards, 31 receiving yards, one touchdown), Demaryius Thomas (seven catches, 88 receiving yards, one touchdown), Wes Welker (five catches, 61 receiving yards, one touchdown) and Julius Thomas (five catches, 35 yards, one touchdown) all had fine days.

How’s that for balance?

Can #4) Luck Running Out

Andrew Luck’s performance looks good on paper as he was one of the best fantasy quarterbacks yesterday with his 326 passing yards, 32 rushing yards and four touchdowns. Unfortunately, that stat line is pretty misleading as the Colts offense sputtered for much of the day as they got worked by the Cincinnati Bengals. Garbage time points are still fantasy points, but there is still cause for concern here as the Colts offense continues to have the look of the least creative offense in football.

On the plus side, Luck did get some help from an unlikely pair as Da’Rick Rogers (six catches for 107 yards and two scores) and LaVon Brazill (three catches, 53 yards and two scores) came up big for the Colts. It’s hard to reach too much into one game, but it’s clear the days of Darrius Heyward-Bey being a significant part of the offense seem to be over.

Can #5) Points a Plenty

Detroit and Philadelphia were supposed to put up the most combined points in the NFL this week, but awoke on Sunday to find six inches of snow on the field and frigid conditions at kickoff. Reggie Bush made it all the way through warm-ups before getting hurt, but the two teams still didn’t disappoint as the Eagles and LeSean McCoy (217 rushing yards and two scores) won 34-20 in a game where you couldn’t even attempt extra points because of the conditions.

While very fun to watch, you have to throw out most of the performances based on the unique weather situation. I’m still shocked there wasn’t some type of “snowballgate” situation we’re talking about from that game.

Can #6) Fin Some, Lose Some

In yet another exciting finish, the Dolphins came up with a huge road win in Pittsburgh as Antonio Brown stepped out of bounds on what would have been an amazing game winning “hook and lateral” play at the end.  The Dolphins game ball has to go to Charles Clay, who posted seven catches for 97 yards and two touchdowns. Clay is quickly becoming a TE1 and may end up being the steal of the waiver wire this season. Of course, you knew about him well before this season if you follow DLF.

Enjoy the Bears and Cowboys!
