Waiver Wire Advice: Week Five

Ken Kelly

mcgrathWe’ll be covering some of the hot names on the majority of dynasty league waiver wires each week for our premium content members.  These players will likely be owned in a minority of dynasty leagues. We won’t waste your time with bigger names who are likely owned in your league like Kenbrell Thompkins, or the likely one week wonders like Dallas Clark or Vonta Leach because you guys are just too good for that.  We’re simply going to cover some players who could be targets this week if you have an open roster spot and are willing to throw a dart with the hope of getting lucky.

Mainstream waiver wire articles will be posted all over the Internet this week begging people to pick up obvious players, but our job is to give you information to make informed and educated decisions and stay ahead of the curve, not on it.

Just remember one other very important thing – you’re in a dynasty league, not a re-draft league. Don’t get too enamored by the one hit wonders and drop your young projects in a quest to find lightning in a bottle. Savvy dynasty league owners will tell you the best players on the wire each and every year end up being the ones dropped by impatient owners, not the ones who suddenly break out. We won’t repeat many names here, so check out the list from prior weeks as we move along.

With that being said, here are this week’s picks in order of priority (as a side note, this is an especially weak group this week):

1.) Rashad Jennings, RB OAK

He’s likely rostered in your league, but in case it’s not, he’s worth a spot for sure with Darren McFadden hurt. Jennings has historically been up and down, but he may just get a nice extended look right in time for the bye weeks.

2.) Sean McGrath, TE KC

The Chiefs may have just found their solution at tight end and it’s Sean McGrath? Slowly, but surely, McGrath has become a bigger part of the offense for Kansas City and he had a nice game this week with five catches for 64 yards and a score. There’s still a lot to play out, but McGrath has made his mark early on here.

3.) Chris Owusu, WR TB

Owusu was signed from the practice squad this morning to replace the suddenly unemployed Kevin Ogletree. He may always be one hit away from being done with his history of concussions, but he has a lot of talent and natural athletic ability. The Bucs are cleaning house here and it should be interesting to see what Owusu can do.

4.) Kris Durham, WR DET

Let’s not get crazy here, but it was Durham, not Ryan Broyles, who benefited the most from Nate Burleson’s absence this week. Expectations should be kept in check, but let’s just see what happens.

5.) Ryan Fitzpatrick, QB TEN

With Jake Locker hurt, it’s time for Fitzpatrick to again be a starting quarterback in the NFL. We know what to expect from Fitzpatrick and it’s the unexpected. He’s notorious for having great games mixed with clunkers, but again, the bye weeks may require you to be creative depending on your depth.

6.) Deonte Thompson, WR BAL

He finally made his season debut and had fifty receiving yards before getting a concussion. He’s one to monitor for sure.

7.) Tashard Choice, RB BUF

You’d have to be pretty desperate to add Choice, but if CJ Spiller and Fred Jackson both can’t go in a short week, Choice is going to be the next man up. Don’t expect much, but he could give you something this week if all the cards (or Bills) fall the right way.
