Waiver Wire Advice: Week Two

Ken Kelly

pryorWe’ll be covering some of the hot names on the majority of dynasty league waiver wires each week for our premium content members.  These players will likely be owned in a minority of dynasty leagues. We won’t waste your time with bigger names who are likely owned in your league like Kenbrell Thompkins, or the likely one week wonders like Dallas Clark or Vonta  Leach because you guys are just too good for that.  We’re simply going to cover some players who could be targets this week if you have an open roster spot and are willing to throw a dart with the hope of getting lucky.

Mainstream waiver wire articles will be posted all over the Internet this week begging people to pick up players like Julius Thomas and Marlon Brown. It’s actually kind of comical. Followers of DLF not only knew of these players, they likely already had them on their rosters. In short, they’re not sleepers to us and haven’t been for some time. After all, we focused on Thomas as a spotlighted player back in June and then again as one of our Summer sleepers back in July. Our own Chad Scott focused on Brown as part of his Mining for Paydirt article early last week.  In fact, he predicted Brown would have exactly four catches, 65 and a touchdown, which HE DID! No, we don’t hit on every player (we struck out on Jarius Wright this week), but our job is to give you information to make informed and educated decisions and stay ahead of the curve, not on it.

Just remember one other very important thing – you’re in a dynasty league, not a re-draft league. Don’t get too enamored by the one hit wonders and drop your young projects in a quest to find lightning in a bottle. Savvy dynasty league owners will tell you the best players on the wire each and every year end up being the ones dropped by impatient owners, not the ones who suddenly break out. We won’t repeat many names here, so check out the list from prior weeks as we move along.

With that being said, here are this week’s picks in order of priority:

1.) Terrelle Pryor, QB OAK
As we said late last week, Pryor has the odd ability to be a better quarterback in fantasy than reality. His athletic ability is sure to earn some points every week even though his accuracy woes and the mistakes he makes will be brutal to watch at times, just like those of Tim Tebow were. On the plus side, Pryor looked better this week than he ever had in his career. He’s still a major project and chances are he won’t be the Raiders quarterback of the future, but he’s certainly earned some time to prove otherwise. He’s now very worthy of a stash as a developmental quarterback. It’s going to be interesting to see what happens when defenses now have some tape on him and can prepare a little better.

2.) Julian Edelman, WR NE
Edelman tends to make this list every year. He’s constantly undervalued and is the most familiar face in the passing offense for the Patriots. While there’s little doubt Danny Amendola remains the top target in the passing game until Rob Gronkowski returns, Edelman should retain value based on the lack of other reliable options in the receiving game. Make no mistake, Kenbrell Thompkin face planted this week and really disappointed those who owned him. Thompkins will get more time to prove himself, but Edelman should be owned since the receiving corps is so young and inexperienced.

3.) Kellen Winslow, TE NYJ
Say what you will about his personality, but it’s good to see him back in the NFL and playing well. Geno Smith (like Pryor and EJ Manuel) looked much better than anticipated this week and Winslow has emerged as a legitimate option. You could do worse as a bye week fill in at tight end – just don’t be surprised if his knee troubles recur.

4.) Jermaine Kearse, WR SEA
Kearse outplayed Chris Harper and a host of others to make the team this year. On Sunday, he even responded with the all-important go-ahead touchdown against the Panthers. While his production is bound to be up and down, Kearse is coming along quite nicely and makes for a nice stash in dynasty leagues as a developmental wide receiver.

5.) LeGarrette Blount, RB NE
You can throw Brandon Bolden into this mix as well. With Shane Vereen on the shelf for a few weeks, one of these two could get some serious playing time if Stevan Ridley continues to have ball protection issues.

6.) Harry Douglas, WR ATL
Douglas is another player who seems to always be on the roster bubble in dynasty leagues. With Roddy White hurting with a high ankle sprain, Douglas will be needed over the next month.

7.) Alfonso Smith, RB ARI
Many believed the backup to Rashard Mendenhall would be Stepfan Taylor, Andre Ellington or Ryan Williams this week. It was actually Smith, who was rather unimpressive, but still played almost as much as Mendy.  I’d still rather have the youngsters as Smith looks pedestrian, but keep tabs on the situation as it looks pretty fluid.

8.) Charles Clay, TE MIA
Clay responded to the loss of Dusin Keller with five catches for 54 yards this week. He’s still a bit raw, but there’s something to be said for a tight end who plays on every down.

Note: You’ll notice Michael Cox and Da’Rel Scott were not mentioned here because we covered them prior to the game last week here.
