Camp Blog – Update: 8/8 8:00 AM
With all camps now open for the 2013 NFL season, it’s time that I start my annual camp blog to help you stay abreast of news, notes, risers and fallers as we steam toward week-one kickoff in September.
Whether your free agency pool is wide open and available for player additions or if you participate in a form of weekly bidding for free agents, August is the month that you must keep your ear close to the ground and your eyes peeled in search for those all-important and potentially impactful roster additions. Â Every year, virtually unknown players make names for themselves and carve out roster spots where prior they were simply a number or a camp body. Â With a small investment of time each day, a fantasy coach with a quick mouse hand and an available roster spot can change the complexion of their team with a single timely addition.
What follows will simply be the news and notes from around the league that I feel deserves at least some amount of consideration for fantasy impact.  Without regard to format or scoring system, I will  highlight the player and my thoughts as to his value change.  I’ll leave the difficult decision of whether to add the player up to you.  As is the case every year, I tend to spend a lot of time traveling down the rabbit-hole to names and events well below the mainstream stories and players.  Obvious player names receive a lot of attention during camp and will be processed very quickly in fantasy circles.  Non-household names, depth chart rotations and camp talk can yield a few gems every year.  More often than not, these names fade away as quickly as they materialize but we here at DLF have always been known as a group that leaves no stone unturned in finding tomorrow’s stars today.
Some days will receive multiple blog updates, others none. Â But I’ll make sure to do the work to keep you updated. Simply give it a read once or twice a day and feel free to comment or ask questions. Â Let’s get this thing started.
Are all of you fantasy freaks ready for some football?!?!?
Thursday – 8/8 8:00 AM
The buzz is really building around Rams’ tight end Jared Cook. He and Bradford are very much on the same page in camp an the belief is that the speed of the receivers, when combined with Cook, is going to be very difficult for secondaries to deal with.
As quickly as we were hearing about the the camp performances of the Packers’ non-rookie running backs, it’s all been about Eddie Lacy and Jonathan Franklin over the past three days. Look for Alex Green or James Starks to be traded or released before the beginning of the season. Eddie Lacy fans have to be pleased though considering the fantasy fall he took in most drafts.
In the land of the Giants, it appears as though we’re going to be seeing a lot of both Andre Brown and David Wilson come week one. In the most recent iteration of thunder and lightning, it’s obvious that coach Tom Coughlin wants pass protection to play a significant role in the ultimate decision as to who stays on the field. Wilson just doesn’t have the size to perform well in this area, yet he’s too dynamic to leave on the bench. This is shaping up to be one of those even split of touches where each back gets 12-15. That will likely create a fantasy disappointment.
The news is getting less glowing about Le’Veon Bell in Pittsburgh. It’s not about lack of talent as much as it is about being a rookie and understanding pass protection. The Steelers are wanting to feature one particular runner in the offense rather than share the load. Jonathan Dwyer has shed at least 15 pounds and looks better but badly whiffed on an opportunity in 2012 to be the featured runner. Isaac Redman is best as a short yardage back. Bell should eventually lock down this competition with his combination of power running and surprising agility … but he’ll need time.
It’s 50/50 as to who will be the quarterback in Jacksonville, between Blaine Gabbert and Chad Henne. From what I’ve seen, Henne gives them the best chance to win but they need to find out what Gabbert can be. Neither has been overly impressive in camp. Nod goes to Gabbert here, but for only the first half of the season. I have heard very little about my favorite sleeper rookie in 2013, Arizona quarterback Matt Scott. Early on he struggled with consistency but his arm strength and release is very impressive.   It won’t be a surprise if he gets an opportunity in 2013.
Finally some news out of San Francisco not involving Kaepernick or Vernon Davis. A.J. Jenkins is making a little bit of noise but has shown inconsistent hands on occasion. The 9’ers badly need someone to step up and be a legitimate WR2.
In Atlanta, keep an eye on the undrafted running back, Donald Russell. He’s been having a great camp displaying great quickness. His best shot will be at the bottom of the depth chart playing special teams, but you have to start somewhere.
There seems to be a lot of talk about Minnesota surprising this year. I don’t buy it personally although I think they will be better in 2013. They must get an answer about the capabilities of Christian Ponder by week eight. Matt Cassell isn’t likely to be the answer and with an athletic group of quarterbacks coming out in 2014, this is a make or break year for Ponder. And just what has gotten into Greg Jennings. I used to have so much respect for the usually-quiet Jennings, but he’s off the hook now with his opinions and, despite what he feels is the truth, sometimes you just need to snap on your chins strap and keep your mouth shut. Let your game do the talking.
In New England, tight end Zach Sudfeld continues to run with the ones and is likely not available in your dynasty free agency pool any longer. It’s been bad news after bad news for the Pats and their tight ends and Sudfeld is about all that is left. I’m not sure what to make of him or his opportunity in all honesty. He needs to be added but so few tight ends ever become noteworthy.
Camps seem to be a bit quiet right now and that’s understandable what with games starting tonight. More to come…
Tuesday – 8/6 8:00 PM
The young season keeps getting worse with the news that Arrelious Benn (Eagles) and Danario Alexander (Chargers) have both sustained ACL tears.  DX has now torn his right (good) ACL.  Benn tore his left ACL again (2010). Both receivers  take huge career hits on the news.  For the Chargers, this may upgrade Eddie Royal and Macolm Floyd and even perhaps rookie Keenan Allen, but it’s too early to tell.  Vincent Brown gets a bump as well.  Benn really didn’t figure in fantasy for 2013 and this further drives the stock of Russell Shepard higher.  Shepard’s value took a small hit with the unexpectedly quick return of Riley Cooper.  Danny Woodhead may continue to be a hot add on the heels of this news.
Chris Ivory looks like he’ll be back early next week but won’t play in the Jets’ second preseason game.
In St. Louis, it seems that Head Coach Jeff Fisher sees Daryl Richardson as his starter at running back. Â It’s an odd statement so early in the season, but noteworthy nonetheless.
In Green Bay, receivers are dropping like flies. Â Jordy Nelson will be out for most of the preseason as he recovers from knee surgery. Â Randall Cobb injured his bicep, although it doesn’t appear serious. Â The two receivers fighting for the last spot on the depth chart, Kevin Dorsey and Charles Johnson are still down with injuries as well. Â The Packers may need camp bodies soon. Â By the way, Eddie Lacy is getting the first carries with the first string offense.
Titans’ receiver Kendall Wright has shed approximately 15 lbs. in an attempt to get quicker and more agile. Â It seems to be working. Â Nate Washington is looking great in camp and apparently is officially listed as a starter. Â Don’t write off last year’s hot-addition, Taylor Thompson, just yet. Â He’s developed a nice level of chemistry with Jake Locker. Â Both Shonn Greene and Jackie Battle are having great camps thus far.
In the latest depth chart from the Steelers, rookie receiver Markus Wheaton is listed as a third stringer behind both Emmanuel Sanders and Plaxico Burress.
Panther rookie Kenjon Barner continues to have a nice camp and is enjoying more reps with Jonathan Stewart still ‘down’. Â He’s learning patience from DeAngelo Williams. Â He’ll be one to watch on Friday when they take the field against the Bears.
Tuesday – 8/6 9:00 AM
Things continue to go downhill for the Ravens. Not long after losing Dennis Pitta for the year due to a hip injury, the Ravens have now lost Ed Dickson to what could be a minor hamstring tear. It’s very possible that Dickson could miss all the remaining games in the preseason and is likely down for at least three weeks. Newly signed tighy end Visanthe Shiancoe is already running with the starters. Dickson is certain to retain his starting role upon his return, but hamstrings can be tricky.
There wasn’t much coming out of Eagles camp even following the injury to Jeremy Maclin. At least if you consider “not much” being that immediate replacement Riley Cooper dropped a “N” bomb that was caught on video and now has been ‘excused’ from the team so that he can get the help he needs. I personally believe his career is over in the NFL.  The virtually unknown Russell Shepard has been running with the first team now in camp and not in the slot. Shepard, who has decent height at 6’1″ is a freakish athlete and was able to clear 41″ on his vertical, combined with more than 11′ on his broad jump, is lining up ahead of Jason Avant across from DeSean Jackson. He’s untested and unknown but we can’t ignore him any longer while he’s seeing time with the first string. Add him.
Bilal Powell is the starter as things sit for the Jets. Chris Ivory is still nursing his hamstring and Joe McKnight was arrested due to unpaid tickets. Santonio Holmes may be missing the start of the season and could be placed on the PUP list. At this point, it now appears as though Geno Smith has the inside track to the starting job but it’s still early. The Jets are a mess. At least Stephen Hill is starting to come alive a bit in camp.
At running back, get used to increased time share stories. David Wilson/Andre Brown, Ray Rice/Bernard Pierce, Steven Ridley/Shane Vereen, Reggie Bush/Joique Bell, Montee Ball/Ronnie Hillman, Thomas/Ingram/Sproles, etc. The RBBC of a few years ago is now the norm around the NFL with fewer and fewer carry-the-load backs available. It continues to be a development of role players, which ultimately puts more emphasis on the Adrian Petersons and Doug Martins of the game that can still be the bell-cow. Draft accordingly.
Reversing course on my previous belief, EJ Manuel could now very well be your opening day starter. And well he should. The injury prone Kevin Kolb, after being injured again by tripping over a practice mat, just can’t be counted on and the Bills need to develop this young team from the ground up. Kolb is out early this week due to a family death. There’s little reason for them not to use 2013 as the proverbial rebuilding year to get their young talent experience. They aren’t going to the Superbowl and there’s reason for optimism here.
There’s been some chatter in fantasy circles about Tavon Austin not catching more than 60-70 balls in St. Louis. If he stays healthy, I believe he’ll eclipse that mark by week 11. He’s become the offensive focus and he has a willingness to learn that is unmatched. Health will be the key. Brian Quick, who had received praise in spring practices has faded and has been very streaky in camp. He’s no better than the WR3 and his hold on that role is tenuous.
Redskins fans have a lot to be excited about with RGIII’s rehab going so well. He’s now pressing to be able to do more in camp. That’s a great sign. Backup quarterback Kirk Cousins is having a nice camp. At this point, his arrow is pointing higher as a backup and may he be the top target when his rookie deal is up. Receiver Leonard Hankerson is still fighting consistency as is Aldrick Robinson. The Redskins badly need a young, consistent, receiver to be developed across from Pierre Garcon.
Hey, Vince Young has been signed by the Green Bay Packers and will now compete against Graham Harrell and B.J. Coleman for a backup job. It’s an odd spot for him.
In Oakland, rookie Latavius Murray is still sidelined and Rashad Jennings is the undisputed RB2 to Darren McFadden.
Seahawks’ receiver Golden Tate continues to make plays all over the field, even when double teamed.
In Arizona, both Ryan Williams and Rashard Mendenhall are sitting out. Williams may not be back any time soon and it’s possible he will be cut entirely near the end of August if he can’t get his knee right.
Saturday – 8/3 8:00 AM
I’m beginning to wonder if the Bills are cursed at quarterback. Â Kevin Kolb tripped over a practice mat and had to be assisted to the locker room for what appeared to be a somewhat serious knee injury. Â In all likelihood it is probably just a sprain but Buffalo needs the best quarterback in camp to win the job, regardless of how excited they are about E.J. Manuel. Â Speaking of Manuel, the race was said to be about even despite my belief that Kolb would be the starter (I still believe that) and Manuel has been said to have the “it” factor, a definition that I look for specifically in any player. Â The Seahawks’ success under rookie quarterback Russell Wilson will change the way rookie quarterbacks are seen as teams hope for that quick turn-around.
In Chicago, there’s still a lot of talk about who will ultimately be lining up next to Brandon Marshall at receiver.  Alshon Jeffery and Earl Bennett, in that order, are likely to be the likely names.  Bennett, however, may have sustained a concussion after a collision with safety Chris Conte.  Regardless, Bennett has lined up with the starters for the last few years and only has had a couple fantasy-worthy games.  Not much to see here.  I think the biggest bump in value will be for Martellus Bennett, a tight end who, if he stays healthy, is my pick as a break out player that has the potential to leap into the top six within the position.  I’ve been targeting him as my TE2 or as a value oriented TE3, which makes for great trade bait.  Make no mistake though, If Bennett is a top eight tight end, you likely won’t be trading him.  Here’s a name that noone is talking about, receiver Joe Anderson. He’s having a stellar camp and at 6’1″, the NFL-sophomore from Texas Southern has the size to make some noise in any receiver position.  Bonus points that there’s no clear WR2  at the moment.  Make no mistake, standout young players like this are usually just looking to make that WR4 or WR5 spot, with initial duties coming on special teams.
In Kansas City, growing concern over the lack of development or separation-ability from Jonathan Baldwin seems to be the talk. Â Dwayne Bowe is having a nice camp and has good chemistry with Alex Smith. Â There seems to be an obvious desire to get the ball to Dexter McCluster as he’s been seeing the pig a lot in the passing game. Â At tight end, both Kelce and Moeaki seem to be running in a dead heat for the starting gig. Â Rookie runner Knile Davis seems to be settling down and even holding onto the ball.
Coby Fleener, tight end for the Colts, is having a nice camp. Â He’s a player that really needs to step up in his sophomore year. Â Last year he looked soft and unitiated. Â Receiver Griff Whalen has become a fan favorite and is making some noise in camp. Â He was injured in pre-season last year and while he’s having a consistently solid camp, the emphasis is on keeping him healthy.
News from Big D is all over the board as it relates to the running back situation. Â Joseph Randle has been praised for his violent blocking and pass protection ability while Lance Dunbar continues to run well. Â Rookie receiver Terrance Williams has sustained what appears to be a concussion and may not practice for a week or longer. Â This gives more opportunity for Dwayne Harris to step up and grab the open WR3 role. Â It would seem that both Williams and Harris are destined for a rotation in the regular season, until one of them truly locks down the role.
In Miami, Mike Wallace continues to battle a groin injury. Â There’s a buzz about what Dustin Keller is going to be able to do in this offense as his speed and separation ability have been tough for the defense to deal with. With Mike Wallace and speedster Brandon Gibson in the mix, he has a chance to be a nice sleeper this year.
Riley Cooper, ugh. Â I thought about writing a more editorial piece on his situation but ultimately decided against it. Â It’s one of those topics that is best not overly expanded upon. Â You can’t make the reference he did and think that it will blow over. Â At the same time, with that word so pervasive in certain circles along with alcohol being involved, Â it’s easy to see how he made that regrettable choice while in confrontation mode. Â Pure and simple however, it cannot be done nor should it go unpunished. Â In a sport with an extreme amount of team chemistry required, the fences likely cannot be mended in this situation. Â He’s probably done with the Eagles and his single poor choice of words in this situation may also end his career as this isn’t an incident that is isolated to the Eagles.
In New England, tight end Zach Sudfeld and Kenbrell Thompkins continue to make noise. Â Sudfeld is said to be ahead of Jake Ballard as a fine two-way tight end and Thompkins has been consistently good. Â As mentioned previously though, young standout receivers often get a lot of coverage in camp, which ultimately translates into the last spot at the bottom of the depth chart. Â This seems to be the case with Thompkins who is said to be locking down the WR5 role with his performance.
In Atlanta, running backs Donald Russell (Georgia State) and Ronnie Wingo (Arkansas) have been getting some notice. Â Wingo has the most potential because of his catchy last name.
The Packers are pleased with QB2 Graham Harrell who is widening his lead on B.J. Coleman.  Eddie Lacy is picking up a lot of steam and is being praised for his hard running and ability to make something out of nothing.  All Green Bay packs have performed well, leading me to believe that one of  Alex Green or James Starks could be traded.
Thursday – 8/1 11:00 AM
After a slow start, D. Heyward-Bey has put together a couple of nice days, impressing the coaches. Running back Delone Carter is not having a good camp so far. Tight ends Coby Fleener and Dwayne Allen have seen equal time on the field and are lining up at all positions.
Receiver Andrew Hawkins for the Bengals went down with a nasty ankle injury. Final results are not yet in but best scenario is a high ankle sprain. That’s not a great “best case” but it’s all we can offer. There’s a lot of growing chemistry between Tyler Eifert and Andy Dalton. Today Eifert was Dalton’s main target and caught a touchdown in a scrimmage. Remember that from my recent TE draft research article, first round drafted tight ends are fantasy contributors nearly 100% of the time.
Many are holding their breath with quarterback Josh Freeman in Tampa. Word out of camp is that he’s been consistently good in all phases of the game and has a relatively clear lead to retain his starter status.
In Carolina Kenjon Barner is getting a lot of accolades for making great strides in running lower and with more downhill ability. He is said to be performing as well as any of the backs on the roster.
In Houston, running back Ben Tate is missing some time with a sore groin. He’s putting in limited work for the most part. Andre Johnson is 32 years old, how’d that happen?
In Oakland, as expected, Matt Flynn is securing his role as the starting quarterback. Rod Streater continues to be impressive and rookie runner Latavius Murray is sitting out due to injury. Rashad Jennings looks to have a slight lead as the backup back to Darren McFadden.
Not much coming out of Rams’ camp recently other than the two standouts continue to be Tavon Austin and Jared Cook. Both appear to be a major part of the offensive plan. Both are having a heck of a camp.
Wednesday – 7/31 8:00 AM
For you IDP’ers out there, make sure Jon Bostic (MLB) is rostered. Â With D.J. Williams lost for a bit with a calf injury, Bostic is at MLB exclusively and getting all the reps. Â He’s got some serious upside if he were able to knock down the position. Â And with D.J. Williams’ track history, it may be 50/50. Â Either way, Bostic appears to be the future there. Â Deep sleeper receiver Charles Johnson is still not practicing due to a minor knee injury.
Don’t look now but there’s been a fire lit under both James Starks and Alex Green in the Packers’ backfield.  Starks has been running “violently” and with a lot of motivation it seems.  Green has been doing well too.  It’s a muddy situation and the Packers have too many backs to be excited about any one.  All have looked good thus far and it’s anyone’s guess at this point.  One of them could be  trade bait.
As expected, it appears as though Percy Harvin may be able to return sometime during the last month of the season.
Viking quarterback Joe Webb is undergoing a conversion to wide receiver. Â It’s somewhat notable in that Christian Ponder is on anything other than solid footing. Â But veteran Matt Cassell is clearly the QB2 here and will be called into duty quickly if Ponder falters early. Â It’s good to see the name Greg Childs popping up again. Â After blowing out both knees (Patellar tendons) last year, the once-fantasy-desired Childs seems to be bucking the odds and the Vikings have liked what they’ve seen.
In Miami, receiver Marvin McNutt continues to shine. Â With Armon Binns lost to injury and waived, McNutt seems to be catching everything thrown his way.
In a buy-low situation, it appears that Rashard Mendenhall is very clearly going to be the RB1 in Arizona’s offense. Â He’s still young and powerful, even if returning from injury. Â I think too many are sleeping on his potential.
Browns fans will be happy to hear continually that Greg Little appears to be a changed player, both in personality and on-field performance early into camp. Â Little met with former NBA great Alonzo Mourning and has undergone an emotional about-face. Â He’s shaping up to be a great buy-low candidate on a team needing leadership. Â Josh Gordon is back on the field after suffering a bout with knee tendinitis but questions about attitude and work ethic continue to dog the talented young receiver. Â Montario Hardesty continues to be sidelined, again and again, this time with a hamstring.
The Jets are starting to realize that Chris Ivory was traded not because of his talent but because he can’t stay on the field. Â He’s still nursing a tight hamstring. Â The air is leaking from his value balloon in fantasy … as was expected.
Patriots’ receiver Kenbrell Thompkins is having a great camp and is said to be currently the WR4, with Julian Edelman and Josh Boyce ahead of him. Â But Mike Reiss believes WR3 is achievable. Edelman has turned it on recently in camp, however.
More soon …
Tuesday – 7/30 8:00 PM
The obvious news breaking tonight is that Percy Harvin appears to be done for the season, or at least the first 8-12 games. Â It’s a fluid situation and he could be back earlier or slip into December. Â Expect the Hawks to play it by ear based on how their season progresses. Â If they wrap up a playoff spot heading into the final four games of the season, there will be little reason to rush Harvin back into the mix and they may elect to simply allow him to continue rehabbing and bring him back for the playoffs. Â If not, his return will likely be based first upon his progress, followed by team need. Â Either way, it’s yet another big blow for fantasy, the Seahawks and even for Russell Wilson owners. Note that Wilson was just fine with Harvin in the mix in 2012 so this is more about lost 2013 potential than a downgrade.
And by the way, now WR1, Sidney Rice, went abroad (Sweden or Switzerland) for a non-surgical procedure on his knee. Â No word if there was a blonde involved, but I’m betting there was.
On the heels of the Harvin news, this bodes well for Doug Baldwin, a receiver that has flirted with fantasy relevance. Â Following the acquisition of Harvin, teams came-a-callin’ about Baldwin but were turned away by GM John Schneider. Â He’s is in a contract year as a RFA in 2014. Â He’s an immediate add if available in your league. Â Stephen Williams and rookie Chris Harper also get upgrades on the news.
Seriously, the camera adds 10 pounds. Â And with all the cameras at the Packers’ camp, it’s no wonder Eddie Lacy looked like he would tip the scales at 260. Â The Twitterverse was alight on those unflattering photos from camp yesterday but was quickly quelled by new photosho …., er, pictures showing a more normal sized Lacy. Â In all seriousness, Lacy is not a small man and is known for his power and downhill running style. Â Jonathan Franklin looked amazing with the ball in his hands today and overtly pedestrian when trying to pick up blitzing linebackers. Â He needs to place a quick call to Brandon Jackson for pointers.
Here’s a piece of information you may not have known. Â The Oakland Raiders moved the once intriguing deep sleeper of a running back, Taiwan Jones, to corner back. Â It’s safe to drop him unless you’re league carries a specialty slot for running back turned cornerback. Â Even if your league does, I’d still fill it with the New York Jet, Joe McKnight, first.
In Jacksonville, receiver Mike Brown is getting reps with the first team in the slot. Â Ace Sanders is lining up outside. Â With Justin Blackmon’s suspension, there’s opportunity in this offense. Â Neither player projects overly well as a fantasy producer, but all that’s needed is an opportunity. Â Quarterback Blaine Gabbert has a relatively significant yet non-serious ankle sprain. Â This will provide more reps for Chad Henne and one of my favorite unknown rookies, Â quarterback Matt Scott. Â Keep an eye on that name. Â I won’t be surprised at all if Scott sees time under center late in the season. Â He’s a gamer.
Steelers’ running back Jonathan Dwyer has finally taken his size seriously and is down 15-20 lbs. Â It’s probably too late for the super-sized runner and his listed weight in the 220s was joke-worthy. Â I like the way Dwyer runs in all seriousness and have always said if he could lose 15 pounds, he’d really help himself. Â Now we’ll see.
There’s been a couple of questions, via comment here and email asking about the Houston running back situation. Â There’s been very little available on the group but from what I can pick up, it seems that Cierre Wood is having the best camp. Â I think fantasy coaches are putting a bit too much stock in this battle. Â Kubiak has always liked having a large running back stable. Â I understand the desire to have the RB3 here, but don’t force it.
In Tennessee, Justin Hunter is continuing to be ridden by the coaches for toughness and intensity.
It was a relatively slow camp day. Â Hopefully tomorrow will be a bit more active.
Monday – 7/29 10:00 PM
Under the weather tonight so my apologies for a shorter update. Â Still wanted to get you a quick update for the day.
Perhaps the most notable news that isn’t being widely reported, at least from what I’ve seen, is that Arizona Cardinal running back, Ryan Williams, is experiencing soreness in his surgically repaired knee. Â A recent MRI showed no damage but some could argue that it might be better to see something rather than having general soreness and swelling. Â For a player that has been all potential and no production, this is the last thing that is needed. Â Stay tuned but any remaining bloom is quickly wearing off. Â Michael Floyd continues to have a great camp and Rob Housler has been impossible not to notice as well. Â But all eyes are on Arizona’s offensive line and head coach Arians is unhappy about their continual mental errors.
In Dallas, Lance Dunbar is leading in the race to play backup to DeMarco Murray with rookie Joseph Randle at fourth. Â Even Phillip Tanner has flashed potential this week. Â Continued praise for receiver Terrence Williams who is stringing good days together now and obviously gaining confidence. Â Don’t forget that Williams led all college receivers with 1,800+ yards in 2012 as a senior.
A lot of continued buzz about Minnesota’s Cordarrelle Patterson. Â He’s got the size and speed dynamic to be a WR1 and he’s working hard in camp.
Patriot receivers Aaron Dobson, Josh Boyce and Kenbrell Thompkins are all getting reps with the first string offense. Â It’s clear that one of these players will win the WR2 job, but his hold will be tenuous and it’s likely that a rotation will still be employed. Â Steven Ridley is fumbling in camp and being punished for it. Â Much like Washington’s Mike Shanahan and the G-men’s Tom Coughlin, you don’t want to put the ball on the ground when you play for Bill Belichick, you’ll find yourself on the bench very quickly. LeGarrette Blount anyone?
In Buffalo, Kevin Kolb says that rookie receiver Robert Woods is a “stud”. Â Woods reminds me a bit of Greg Jennings in his route maturity and ability to feel defenses. Â I’ve followed him from high school I think the Bills will be happy with his game.
For you IDP’ers, two names to keep an eye on. Â The New York Giants continue to use Mark Herzlich as their MLB. Â It’s his job to lose. Â In Denver, Nate Irving is running in the MLB role and will be given every opportunity to hold onto the job. Â Both are worthy stashes if you are looking for a bye week fill-in with upside. Â I favor Herzlich far more than Irving.
In Seattle, third year receiver Stephen Williams, once a Cardinal, is having a great camp and is turning heads every day. Â Doug Baldwin, as well, is developing chemistry with Russell Wilson. Â Keep an eye on Baldwin should Percy Harvin miss time.
For the 49’ers, none of the young receivers are stepping up to grab the available WR2 opening.
Lastly, in Oalkland, tight end David Ausberry is running away with the starting role while receiver Rod Streater is having the best camp, by far, of all the receivers. Â Scan the wire for Streater, he may just be available.
Sunday – 7/28 9:00 PM
Baltimore
After the disappointing loss of up and coming tight end Dennis Pitta, the Ravens quickly moved to secure the services of Visanthe Shiancoe.  Before you get too excited, realize that Shiancoe is 33 years old and didn’t log a reception with the Patriots last season.  Expect Ed Dickson to remain the the starter.  The loss off both Anquan Boldin and now Pitta makes for a significant concern for Joe Flacco owners.  Flacco has never been a high performing fantasy quarterback and recent events aren’t likely to help in that area.  Receiver Deonte Thompson is having a nice camp, even if it’s only been a few days.  He’s a speedster and he’s been catching most everything thrown his way.  Tandon Doss had a nice spring but Thompson has all the momentum currently.  For a Ravens team needing receiving threats, he’s a worthy stash now, at least for the next two weeks.
Chicago
Rookie Marquess Wilson has strung together a few nice practices as the Bears search for their fourth receiver. Â He’s in a battle with Joe Anderson and both could make the final roster. Â Wilson has a nice set of skills and if he can keep his head on straight, something he was unable to do in college, he’s got a legitimate shot to be a difference maker. Â Wilson is a rookie I’d add immediately if available.
Cincinatti
The scare of the week is owned by A.J. Green who was on the turf with what appeared to be a knee injury.  In the end, it was only a bone bruise and Green is essentially day to day, likely to be back in 5-7 days.  Former tight end Orson Charles will likely be moved to H-Back/Fullback, taking advantage of his size and athleticism.  He won’t be cracking the lineup with Gresham and 2013 rookie Tyler Eiffert well above him on the depth chart. Receiver Marvin Jones has looked more confident and is making a lot of plays in camp, seizing the opportunity presented with A.J. Green down.  Jones is a more dynamic presence than is Mohamed Sanu but Jones is Green’s direct backup.  Jones should be rostered in most deeper leagues.
Buffalo
It’s no secret, quarterbacks Kevin Kolb and rookie EJ Manuel are splitting reps. Â I see little way that Manuel overtakes Kolb as the starter in the preseason, but he should be starting by week six.
Denver
Tight end Julius Thomas has been a hot add in fantasy with word that he was getting reps with the first team. Â He’s now receiving more reps with the twos. Â Montee Ball has not looked good, showing lack of confidence and the inability to get through the line of scrimmage. Â This coupled with Ronnie Hillman lighting it up in camp thus far makes for an interesting item to watch. Â Hillman’s pass protection has seen steady improvement. Â Pass protection could now be an issue with center Dan Koppen now out for the year. Â And get ready for your annual report on Jeremiah Johnson: Â He’s been impressive all camp. Â Over the last three years I can’t remember a fringe player who has received so much camp talk yet never produced during the regular season. Â Is 2013 his year?
Cleveland
It’s Greg Little’s third year as a receiver. Â Time for him to show up. Â For what it’s worth, he’s showing up in camp. Â Davone Bess is a new Brown for 2013 but has a chance to carve out a nice role in the slot. Â He’s underowned in fantasy and is likely available in in your free agent pool. Â With defenses being kept honest with both Josh Gordon and Little, they’re speed must be respected, Bess may be in for a heavy workload in a Wes Welker type of role. Â PPR leagues may want to consider him after the first two games of the preseason depending on usage.
Arizona
Ryan Swope can be dropped in all leagues. Â Concussions have forced him from the game. Â Rashard Mendenhall is still expected to be the lead back for the Cards and it doesn’t appear to even be a question. Â Ryan Williams may factor into the plan but Mendy is getting all the first team work.
Kansas City
Running back Knile Davis continues to disappoint but has shown good speed. Â Receiver Jonathan Baldwin seems sluggish and slow. Â Baldwin is one of those receivers that I felt could be safely cut last year.
Indianapolis
Not much interesting coming out of camp here thus far. Â Darrius Heyward-Bey continues to run with the first team and doesn’t appear to be challenged by anyone below, most notably T.Y. Hilton. Â They are different receivers and Hilton appears to be more suited in the slot. Â But with Andrew Luck under center, expect to see both Hilton and Bey on the field with Reggie Wayne often.
Miami
Chemistry between new receiver Mike Wallace and second year quarterback Ryan Tannehill was slow to develop but seems to be increasing at a consistent clip now. Â Wallace will share a starting receiver spot with returning veteran Brian Hartline. Â The battle of note was for the WR3 role between Brandon Gibson and Armon Binns. Â The dual tendon tear of Binns today has ended that competition. Â It’s disappointing for me as I had been watching Binns closely as a player that I believed had a game similar to A.J. Green. Â Ryan Tannehill has bee looking very confident and looks like he’s ready to take another big step this year.
Dallas
Dez Bryant is said to be looking unstoppable and this could be the year that fulfills all expectations.  Rookie third round selection Terrence Williams was off to a slow start in the spring but has since picked up his game.  The rookie is looking more comfortable and is making plays as he battles Dwayne Harris for the WR3 role.  Williams was drafted with the unspoken expectation that Miles Austin may be playing his last year as a Cowboy.  The slight edge is going to Harris here but there’s little doubt that the organization would love to see Williams win the role.
Philadelphia
A day after the worst news of the young fantasy season regarding the loss of Jeremy Maclin to a torn ACL came out, the talk now is about who will replace him.  Brandon Lloyd is getting a lot of play but word is that the Eagles will look inside for Maclin’s replacement.  This means that Riley Cooper now ascends to the WR2 role across from DeSean Jackson.  Damaris Johnson or Arrelious Benn anyone?  If the Eagles weren’t already looking to run the ball early and often, this most recent news assures fantasy owners that both LeSean McCoy and Bryce Brown will be seeing a lot of work.  As for the aforementioned Riley, he’s flying out of the free agency pool as we speak yet I didn’t even check on his availability in any of my leagues. As for the quarterback battle between Michael Vick and Nick Foles, I don’t get it … at all.  Foles is a horrible fit for what Kelly wants to do. Matt Barkley would be a better fit than Foles.  That said, the competition still appears to be between Vick and Foles with even snaps going to each.  Vick will win this battle handily, I see no way he doesn’t enter the year as the starter.  If he doesn’t, I think Barkley will upset as the starter, not Foles.  The only question about Vick is if he can get the ball out of his hand quickly enough.  Success is not guaranteed here.
San Francisco
For all of you wondering which Vernon Davis will show up in 2013, it appears as if there is a concerted effort to get the ball into his hands. Â This could be due to the fact that he’s the only dynamic receiver left with any level of experience. Â Davis is lining up at every receiver position thus far. Â He should receive a ton of targets in 2013.
New York Giants
If you aren’t on the Rueben Randle train, you’re going to be disappointed. Â Randle will be appearing in one of my upcoming articles and this snowball is rolling downhill and an ever-quickening pace. Â At every turn, Hakeem Nicks appears to be pulling up lame or looking otherwise disinterested. Â Whether it’s because he’s growing tired of the New York spotlights or plain ol’ bad luck, Nicks seems destined to fade away as a Giant. Â And as Nicks fades, Randle is glowing ever-brighter. Â The sophomore Randle is making plays, looks trimmer and is brimming with confidence that is showing up on the field every day. Â It’s a foregone conclusion that he’s locked up the WR3 role and in that offense, he could be a fantasy difference-maker beginning in week one. Â The more interesting story will be about his role in 2014.
Detroit
Running back Joique Bell appears to be running ahead of Mikel Leshoure as the RB2, at least until Sunday when Leshoure was back at the two. Â It’s still early yet and not completely unexpected given Bell’s dynamic and abilities out of the backfield, but Leshoure has shown he can be productive, especially inside the five yard line.
Green Bay
The running game has looked strong across the board. Â Intruguing division II rookie receiver Charles Johnson went down with a leg injury that doesn’t appear serious but you’ll want to check back to be sure.
Carolina
Jonathan Stewart is still hurt, surprised?  DeAngelo Williams sits atop the depth chart and something tells me he could have his most noteworthy year in some time.  That’s probably just the wine talking.  Rookie Kenjon Barner has been looking fluid and dynamic.  Will be interesting to see how the Panthers plan to use Barner as camp grinds on.
Tennessee
Justin Hunter continues to raise the ire of coaches. Â He can’t seem to do anything right, seems soft and unlikely to sniff a big role as it stands. Â I’m hoping he’s got more in the tank as he was the rookie that I believed would most outplay his fantasy draft situation in the coming years. Â Still plenty of time but he’s off on the wrong foot. Â Quarterback Jake Locker is in a make or break year in all likelihood and he’s not off to a good start either. Â He’s appeared erratic and unsettled early on.
New Orleans
The stars are finally aligning for Mark Ingram. Â That said, Pierre Thomas and Darren Sproles aren’t going anywhere. Â Look for Ingram to see more red zone touches this year and Sproles to continue to punish the defenses all over the field. Â Thomas, if he can remain healthy, has a great nose for the line of scrimmage and runs much smaller than his size would suggest. Â They can all be productive but Ingram has the best upside in dynasty. At receiver, don’t sleep on Joe Morgan. Â Continue to watch the battle between Nick Toon and rookie Kenny Stills, one of them is likely to pull down a roster spot and have upside. Â They’re all getting extra work with Colston sidelined.
That’s all for today. Â Starting tomorrow we’ll take it much quicker and not broken out by teams.
