Devy Watch: Shelton Gibson

Tyler Morales

One of College Football’s most explosive athletes currently resides in Morgantown, West Virginia waiting to break out and become one of the Big 12’s wide receivers. Shelton Gibson stands at 5’11 195 lbs and is one of the most explosive athletes College Football has to offer. Gibson will be entering his junior season at West Virginia and is being extremely undervalued in devy fantasy leagues. He has the chance to be a fast riser on draft boards once the Mountaineers decide to unleash him. Outside of K.D. Cannon, Gibson may be the most exciting wide receiver in the Big 12. Check him out for yourself.

YouTube does not have an official Shelton Gibson highlight tape just yet but there are plenty of plays on there that will make you jump out of your seat. As a redshirt freshman, Gibson was primarily used as a return specialist but exploded during his sophomore campaign. Gibson totaled 37 receptions which was second on the team, but led the team in receiving yards with 887 and a 24.0 yards per catch. As a kick returner, Gibson had 361 yards on 11 returns which averages out to 32.8 yards per return. When the ball is in this man’s hands, watch out. How good was Gibson’s 2015 season? Well, nobody else had a season quite like it.

gibson stats

From 2000-2015, nobody put up the same numbers as Gibson did in 2015. West Virginia receiver Daikiel Shorts led the team with 45 receptions, totaled 528 yards and five touchdowns. Gibson had eight less receptions and out-gained him by 359 yards. Gibson should be the team’s primary target this year and with starting quarterback Skylar Howard back. Tavon Austin, Kevin White, Stedman Bailey and Mario Alford are all wide receivers from West Virginia that have been drafted in the past three years. They are starting to pump out wide receivers, and Gibson will be the next one to go.

Player comparisons are big when it comes to the NFL draft. When you think of Shelton Gibson, think of a bigger Phillip Dorsett mixed with Tavon Austin’s YAC ability. Gibson’s fastest 40-yard-dash came at a Duke football camp where he ran a 4.32 in high school. He also holds his high school’s record for the fastest 100 and 200 meters. The dude can flat out fly. Expect Gibson to be drafted in the Day two portion of the 2017 NFL Draft when it’s all said and done.

In two devy drafts, I was able to snag Gibson in rounds 19 and 21 – incredible value. It won’t be long until Gibson becomes a popular name in devy drafts. Draft him, watch him breakout and flourish in his success.
