Dynasty Scouts Conference Reviews: SEC and BIG 12

With college football in full swing, we’ll be bringing you a review each and every week. These recaps will feature sections for “Premier Conference Performer,” “Rising Players,” “Falling Players,” and a special Freshman spotlight. These weekly reviews will keep you up-to-date on all the happenings in devy leagues and allow you to keep tabs on future dynasty league assets. By the time the NFL Draft rolls around, you won’t see too many strangers.

SEC

Premier Conference Performer

Nick Chubb, RB Georgia (Sophomore)
16 carries, 120 yards, two touchdowns vs. Louisiana Monroe

Chubb turned in his ninth straight 100-yard game. Many consider him to be an early Heisman contender and he got off to a good start.

Rising Players

Pharoh Cooper, WR South Carolina (Junior)
Three catches, 45 yards, one touchdown, four carries, 20 yards, 1/2 passing, -6 passing yards

The Gamecocks Mr. Versatility did a little bit of everything in a 17-13 win over North Carolina. His best spot is wideout, but look for Steve Spurrier to be creative with him all year long.

Derrick Henry, RB Alabama (Junior)
13 carries, 147 yards, three touchdowns, two catches, 12 yards

Henry showed his typical burst and vision against a Wisconsin defense that traditionally does well against the run. Expect him to have a heavy workload this season and to be a day two NFL Draft choice next year.

Alex Collins, RB Arkansas (Junior)
12 carries, 127 yards, one touchdown vs. UTEP

Bret Bielema loves the ground game, so Collins should get plenty of love this season. His 127 yards on the ground included a 70-yard scamper.

Falling Players

Jeremy Johnson, QB Auburn (Junior)
11/21 passing, 137 passing yards, one touchdown, three interceptions, five carries, 11 yards, one touchdown

People had high hopes for Johnson this season, but he sputtered and was inconsistent against Louisville Saturday. He still displayed a strong arm, but had a few questionable decisions.

Dak Prescott, QB Mississippi State (Senior)
22/38 passing, 237 yards, two touchdowns, eight carries, 72 yards, one touchdown

Prescott didn’t necessarily have a bad game, it just took him a while to get rolling. In fact, the Associated Press story credited Prescott with turning the Bulldogs’ fortunes around once he decided to pull the ball down and run. The fact the coaching staff asked him to run less and the offense struggling as a result is a warning sign that maybe his passing skills are still in development.

Johnny McCrary, QB Vanderbilt (Sophomore)
18/34 passing, 217 passing yards, one touchdown, two interceptions, eight carries, 58 yards

His touchdown didn’t come until the fourth quarter against a suspect Western Kentucky squad. The two picks don’t inspire confidence for when the brutal SEC schedule kicks in for real.

Freshman Spotlight
Christian Kirk, WR Texas A&M

Kirk returned a punt 79 yards for a score and had six catches for 106 yards, including a 66-yard touchdown on a bubble screen while knocking off No. 15 Arizona State.

BIG 12

Premier Conference Performer

Seth Russell, QB Baylor (Junior)
15/30 passing, 576 passing yards, five TDs, six rushes, 59 yards, one rushing touchdown

Yes, Baylor’s numbers are always gaudy, but after having Bryce Petty at the controls for so long, it was interesting to see what a new face would do. The Bears offense didn’t miss a beat in a romp over SMU.

Rising

Sam B. Richardson, QB Iowa State (Senior)
21/29 passing, 233 passing yards, two touchdowns vs. Northern Iowa

Richardson played well in the second half, with both of his scores coming after the break. His yards per attempt in this game was better than his career average by almost a yard and a half. He will need to play well to help his coach keep his job.

Devin Lauderdale, WR Texas Tech (Junior)
Eight catches, 150 yards, two touchdowns vs. Sam Houston State

His eight catches are about a fourth of what he had in all of 2014 (31). He also appeared to have good rapport with sophomore quarterback Pat Mahomes, which would lead one to believe he could have a good season in store.

Wendell Smallwood, RB West Virginia (Junior)
11 carries, 96 yards, one touchdown vs. Georgia Southern

He helped balance out the pass-happy Mountaineers attack, but was turned away on a fourth-and-1 attempt in the first quarter. He will need to keep up this pace to keep opposing defenses honest.

Winston Dimel, RB Kansas State (Freshman)
Eight carries, 29 yards, two touchdowns vs. South Dakota

While the stat line wasn’t really impressive, the fact the Kansas State coaching staff had confidence enough in him to get him two scores is telling. He’s someone to keep an eye on in the coming weeks.

Falling

Trevone Boykin, QB TCU (Senior)
26/42 passing, 246 passing yards, one passing touchdown, one interception, 18 rushes, 92 yards

The Heisman hopeful had a middling day through the air and an above-average one on the ground. The Minnesota defense make Boykin work for everything he got, despite the Horned Frogs coming out on top.

Samaje Perine, RB Oklahoma (Sophomore)
11 carries, 33 yards, one touchdown

I had high hopes for Perine this season, but he did not get off to a strong start against a weak Akron team. He is still only a sophomore, so he could bounce back, but I would monitor how the carries are divvied up going forward.

Tyrone Swoopes, QB Texas (Junior)
7/22 passing, 93 passing yards, ten carries, 17 yards

I feel like I’m piling on to the Longhorns bad night Saturday, but the performance just wasn’t very good. Yes, the Notre Dame defense looks to be quite solid, but Texas has a lot of problems and Swoopes didn’t appear to be helping their cause.

Freshman Spotlight

Joe Mixon, RB Oklahoma
Five carries, 27 yards, three catches, 115 yards, one touchdown vs. Akron

The highlight was a 76-yard yard score, but with Perine playing so poorly, I’d keep an eye on how many touches Mixon gets in the next couple of weeks. If he becomes a three-down option for the Sooners, he immediately becomes a serious devy prospect.
