Undrafted Free Agent (UDFA) Tracker

After an exciting weekend of drafting, NFL teams run straight to the waiver wire to acquire the most coveted names that didn’t hear their name called in Chicago. As a disclaimer, nearly all of these players are long shots to ever be fantasy contributors, but they are part of the fun that is dynasty fantasy football and you never know where you may find the next Arian Foster, so let’s dive into some one the names to know for the later rounds of your rookie drafts.

Devante Davis, WR PHI

It’s hard think of a better place for the best available UDFA on many peoples boards to land. Devante Davis signed with the Philadelphia Eagles on Saturday. After the departure of Jeremy Maclin, the Eagles were left with only Jordan Matthews, Josh Huff and Riley Cooper. They quickly filled the initial hole, drafting Nelson Agholor at #20 overall in the NFL Draft. With the Davis signing, I see him competing with Cooper more than anybody – the only real issue in playing that role is beating him may be his only shot at making the team (Cooper is signed through 2018 and it would cost them more to cut him that keep him). I think Davis is going to have to really show out in practice/preseason to make the Eagles roster, but I also think if he does get cut, he has a good shot at being scooped up by another team quickly.

Zach Zenner , RB DET

Zenner was a Twitter favorite as the NFL Draft came down to its final moments, but he went undrafted, giving him the opportunity to choose his destination. The running back from our own Scott Fish’s home town flirted with the idea of signing with the San Diego Chargers, but he opted to sign with the Detroit Lions instead. I like this spot a lot for Zenner – the Lions did select Ameer Abdullah in the second round as the fourth running back off the board, but other than that, I don’t see any other long term options on the team as I see Joique Bell and Theo Riddick both as a JAG (just a guy). After three consecutive years of 2,000 yard seasons in college, I look forward to seeing what Zenner can do for the Lions in the preseason.

Thomas Rawls, RB SEA

Rawls signed with the Seattle Seahawks in undrafted free agency. Outside of Marshawn Lynch, there is no running back on the Seattle depth chart I am convinced is better than Rawls (ducks from C-Mike truthers). I think Rawls will be an interesting player to watch, simply because the Seahawks have never showed much faith in Robert Turbin or Michael, so an impressive camp by Rawls could result in him getting carries as soon as 2015.

Andre Davis, WR BUF

Davis, who I wrote about for DLF earlier this off-season, signed with the Buffalo Bills on Saturday afternoon. After Sammy Watkins, Robert Woods, Percy Harvin and their seventh round pick Dezmin Lewis, the Bills have a bunch of receivers who probably shouldn’t be on NFL teams. I understand the odds of Davis making the team are still slim to none, but I think he is as good as any of these UDFAs who people will be taking in the fourth and fifth round of upcoming rookie drafts.

Terrell Watson, RB CIN

When a running back runs for over 4,000 yards and 52 touchdowns in his final two seasons (no matter the level of competition), that is impressive. Watson is a metrics/production favorite and he signed with the Cincinnati Bengals on Saturday. The Bengals have a clear top two in Jeremy Hill and Giovani Bernard, but Watson will be given the opportunity to compete for the third string position.

Trey Williams, RB HOU

The Texans added a local product from Texas A&M, Trey Williams, to compete for a spot on their running back depth chart. Just before the draft, the Texans signed Chris Polk, so Williams is likely competing with Alfred Blue for a roster spot. If Williams is able to beat out Blue, the Texans running back depth chart is definitely a fluid one – Arian Foster rarely plays the full 16-game slate, so monitoring their depth chart is definitely important for dynasty owners.

Rasheed Bailey, WR PHI

Bailey is the other receiver who the Eagles picked up in undrafted free agency. He led Division III in 2014 with 1,707 receiving yards and 19 touchdowns with Deleware Valley. Bailey is another metrics favorite and was profiled by Rotoviz earlier this off-season. Bailey will be competing with the aforementioned Devante Davis for a spot on the Eagles roster, it will be an interesting battle to watch this off-season, although their is a chance neither win this battle because of that terrible Riley Cooper contract.

Antwan Goodley, WR DAL

Goodley stays in the state of Texas, signing with the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys wide receiver depth chart after Dez Bryant, Terrence Williams and Cole Beasley is fairly barren. Goodley will have the opportunity to compete for the WR4 spot, I think he is a decent talent, so it will be interesting to watch what comes of this signing.

Austin Hill, WR SEA

Hill had one of the best seasons among college receivers in 2012 with 81 catches for 1,364 yards and 11 touchdowns. Unfortunately, it is three years later and it is unclear if he will ever be able to fully recover from his ACL tear in 2013. Hill signed with the Seahawks on Saturday. The good news – the Seahawks don’t have any wide receivers who really blow you away, so it really is an open competition for targets. The bad news – no wide receiver has ever been able to a consistent fantasy option with Russell Wilson under center and that will only get more difficult with Jimmy Graham getting the majority of targets, as he should.

Kasen Williams, WR CIN

Williams is from the University of Washington and signed with the Cincinnati Bengals in undrafted free agency. His production was minimal throughout his college career, but what makes him an intriguing UDFA player is his 6’1” 219 pound frame and landing in a situation where the WR2 position is pretty wide open. Neither Marvin Jones or Mohammed Sanu has ever proven consistent/healthy enough to be locked in as the WR2. Am I saying that Williams is going to be Bengals WR2? No, it is very unlikely, but the wide receiver depth chart after AJ Green is a very fluid situation.

Darius Davis, WR SF

After drafting DeAndre Smelter, the 49ers added another wide receiver in undrafted free agency in Darius Davis from Henderson State. Davis is another intriguing small school receiver with big time production. In his career, Davis set Henderson State career records in catches (179), receiving yards (3,686), and touchdowns (47), averaging 20.6 yards per catch. Davis will be a long shot to make the 49ers roster, but a player to watch, nonetheless.
