DLF IDP Mock Draft Review

Whenever we ask our IDP readers what they want more of here at Dynasty League Football, they almost always immediately say “ADP data with defensive players mixed with offensive players.” Due to the vast array of defensive scoring systems in the IDP world, it’s often easier said than done. But in order to give the readers what they want we used what we consider a pretty “standard” IDP scoring format and started the first DLF IDP mock drafts. These drafts are all comprised of DLF team members since we have recently added more very talented IDP writers to our team, Eric Breeze (@Breeze121212) and Eric Coleman (@UtahEC). As we plan on increasing our IDP focus, we will be doing these mocks much more regularly in an attempt to gage the ADP landscape and player value. For reference, here is a quick overview of the scoring setup.

In this first installment I’m going to recap rounds one through five of the mock and share my thoughts. The draft order was randomly generated by MyFantasyLeague.com.

1.01- Eric Olinger– J.J. Watt, DE HOU

1.02- Scott Peak– Odell Beckham, WR NYG

1.03- Dan Meylor– Rob Gronkowski, TE NE

1.04- Eric Breeze– Dez Bryant. WR DAL

1.05- Eric Coleman– Mike Evans, WR TB

1.06- Russell Clay– Antonio Brown, WR PIT

1.07- Jaron Foster- Julio Jones, WR ATL

1.08- Steve Wyremski- Demaryius Thomas, WR DEN

1.09- Karl Safchick- A.J. Green, WR CIN

1.10- TheFFGhost- Le’Veon Bell, RB PIT

1.11- Jason Blanton- Calvin Johnson, WR DET

1.12- Doug Green- Andrew Luck, QB IND

My Pick: The selection of J.J. Watt might raise a couple eyebrows but the positional advantage he brings is unparalleled. He scored 116.4 points more than the DE2, Jason Pierre-Paul, or nearly 7.5 points more per week. Even more impressive, he scored twice as many points as the DE5.

Best Value: The first round was filled with the usual suspects but getting Antonio Brown at 1.06 was great news for Dan. His fantasy floor is as high as any player in the league. He had at least five catches and 70 yards in every single game last year and scored 30+ points six times.

Biggest Surprise: Even though his ADP in the offense-only mock drafts support the selection, Scott’s selection of Odell Beckham over more proven players surprises me, personally. I’m not saying it was a bad selection, I respect anyone willing to trust their gut.

2.01- Doug Green- Jordy Nelson, WR GB

2.02- Jason Blanton- Alshon Jeffery, WR CHI

2.03- TheFFGhost- Eddie Lacy, RB GB

2.04- Karl Safchick- Randall Cobb, WR GB

2.05- Steve Wyremski- DeAndre Hopkins, WR HOU

2.06- Jaron Foster- Luke Kuechly, LB CAR

2.07- Russell Clay- Todd Gurley, RB FA

2.08- Eric Coleman- Sammy Watkins, WR BUF

2.09- Eric Breeze- Amari Cooper, WR FA

2.10- Dan Meylor- Aaron Rodgers, QB GB

2.11- Scott Peak- Jimmy Graham, TE SEA

2.12- Eric Olinger- T.Y. Hilton, WR IND

My Pick: I love T.Y. Hilton. He’s the primary target of the league’s best young quarterback. The addition of Andre Johnson and Frank Gore, plus the return of Dwayne Allen will take defensive attention away from Hilton, giving him a chance to flirt with double digit touchdowns for the first time of his career.

Best Value: Getting Jimmy Graham at 2.11 could prove to be a monumental steal. Everyone is expecting Graham’s fantasy output to take a massive hit in Seattle, but nobody knows. Did Russell Wilson spread the ball around so much because he had to or because he chose to? Graham is undoubtedly the best wide receiver on the roster and he plays tight end.

Biggest Surprise: Russell’s selection of Todd Gurley as the third running back in this draft was an eye-opener for me. Coming off an ACL tear and not knowing where he’ll play on Sundays make him a bit of a gamble for me. On the flip side, the overall state of the running back position is less than ideal so I get the big upside gamble on a player being called “the best running back prospect since Adrian Peterson.”

3.01- Eric Olinger- Jeremy Hill, RB CIN

3.02- Scott Peak- Kelvin Benjamin, WR CAR

3.03- Dan Meylor- Brandin Cooks, WR NO

3.04- Eric Breeze- LeSean McCoy, RB BUF

3.05- Eric Coleman- Kevin White, WR FA

3.06- Russell Clay- C.J. Mosley, LB BAL

3.07- Jaron Foster- DeMarco Murray, RB PHI

3.08- Steve Wyremski- Melvin Gordon, RB FA

3.09- Karl Safchick- Bobby Wagner, LB SEA

3.10- TheFFGhost- Jordan Matthews, WR PHI

3.11- Jason Blanton- Lavonte David, LB TB

3.12- Doug Green- DeAndre Levy, LB DET

My Pick: By taking J.J. Watt first overall I was forced to make a decision here, grab a young running back early or ignore the position for many rounds and deal with a running back committee of aging veterans. I chose to grab Hill, who is my dynasty RB3. I love what I saw from him last year and he forms a dynamic duo with Giovani Bernard in Hue Jackson’s offense in Cincinnati.

Best Value: Even though I like waiting on linebackers in IDP start-ups, getting Lavonte David as the fourth linebacker selected is a steal. He’s the top ranked linebacker in my personal dynasty rankings.

Biggest Surprise: Similar to the last round, taking Melvin Gordon, a rookie running back, over similar players with similar upside is a gamble I’m not comfortable making. Carlos Hyde, C.J. Anderson and Lamar Miller were all still available and I know what uniform they’ll be putting on.

4.01- Doug Green- Jamaal Charles, RB KC

4.02- Jason Blanton- Matt Forte, RB CHI

4.03- TheFFGhost- Robert Quinn, DE STL

4.04- Karl Safchick- Keenan Allen, WR SDC

4.05- Steve Wyremski- C.J. Anderson, RB DEN

4.06- Jaron Foster- Russell Wilson, QB SEA

4.07- Russell Clay- Jamie Collins, LB NEP

4.08- Eric Coleman- Carlos Hyde, RB SF

4.09- Eric Breeze- Jason Pierre-Paul, DE NYG

4.10- Dan Meylor- Adrian Peterson, RB MIN

4.11- Scott Peak- Martavis Bryant, WR PIT

4.12- Eric Olinger- Emmanuel Sanders, WR DEN

My Pick: With 21 wide receivers selected through the first 47 picks, I made Emmanuel Sanders the 22nd out of 48. Opinions vary across the board on Sanders and he’s accused of being a product of Peyton Manning but I’ve been a fan since early in his Steelers’ days. I don’t expect him to as the WR5 again but I’m 100% confident he will be in the WR13-WR24 range.

Best Value: Steve taking Melvin Gordon in the last round surprised me because of who was still available, but he smartly covered his bases by grabbing C.J. Anderson here. When the draft is over and we’re looking at Steve’s team, we won’t see which round they were taken in, just the fact he has a couple of solid young runners.

Biggest Surprise: The Martavis Bryant hype train is approaching Justin Hunter status. While I was very skeptical of Hunter last year, I am a huge fan of Bryant’s. His style of play matches up with the sandlot style of Ben Roethlisberger perfectly. He’s big, fast, explosive and complements Antonio Brown perfectly.

5.01- Eric Olinger- Navarro Bowman, LB SF

5.02- Scott Peak- Marshawn Lynch- RB SEA

5.03- Dan Meylor- Jarvis Landry, WR MIA

5.04- Eric Breeze- Travis Kelce, TE KC

5.05- Eric Coleman- Davante Adams, WR GB

5.06- Russell Clay- Chandler Jones, DE NE

5.07- Jaron Foster- Arian Foster, RB HOU

5.08- Steve Wyremski- Cam Newton, QB CAR

5.09- Karl Safchick- DeVante Parker, WR FA

5.10- TheFFGhost- Dorial Green-Beckham, WR FA

5.11- Jason Blanton- Giovani Bernard, RB CIN

5.12- Doug Green- Golden Tate, WR DET

My Pick: Linebackers are going faster in this mock than I expected, but seeing my dynasty LB3 still available after six were selected made me very happy. When week one rolls around, Bowman will be approximately 20 months removed from ACL reconstruction. Without Patrick Willis or Chris Borland next to him there will be a huge opportunity for IDP production.

Best Value: At this time last year, Giovani Bernard had an ADP of 13.20 and Jason grabbed him with the 59th pick in this draft. The thing is, not much has changed with Gio since he entered the league. He was drafted into a committee with BenJarvus Green-Ellis and now finds himself the 1b to Jeremy Hill. Bernard can still have a Darren Sproles like role in this offense and provide RB2 numbers with Hill in the lineup.

Biggest Surprise: Even though I trust The Ghost’s rookie evaluation as much as anyone I know, Dorial Green-Beckham makes me nervous regardless of what round I get him. He has a Josh Gordon or Justin Blackmon level of knucklehead in him but I get the gamble because he has similar talent as well. If he has his head on straight it will pay off nicely.
