The Dynasty Aftermath: Week Five

Welcome to DLF’s Dynasty Aftermath. This Tuesday staple is our longest running signature piece as we have a little fun after a tough week at the Dynasty League Football office. You’ll find this article will review the week’s happenings in a variety of ways and help set you up for the coming weeks as we spin around the league in the way we know best.

Let’s take a look back at the opening week that was!

Week Five Fantasy MVP

Well, it seems Demaryius Thomas is through with his early season slump as he went off against the Cardinals for eight catches, 226 yards and two touchdowns, scoring more fantasy points this week than he had the entire season. It was only a matter of time for Thomas and hopefully it was worth the wait if you owned him. While this will likely be his best game all season, don’t expect too many single digit performances moving forward, either.

Week Five Fantasy LVP

A week after lighting up the scoreboard for seven catches, 54 receiving yards and three touchdowns against the Redskins, Larry Donnell rewarded his owners by posting a big, fat goose egg against a suspect Atlanta defense. Donnell likely lost as many games for his owners as he won last week. Fantasy football is so much fun!

Lineup Fun

The unbeatable lineup of the week…

QB Russell Wilson SEA = 201 passing yards, 122 rushing yards, three total touchdowns
RB Matt Forte CHI = 61 rushing yards, 12 catches, 105 receiving yards, one touchdown
RB Arian Foster HOU = 157 rushing yards, two catches, 15 receiving yards, two touchdowns
RB Pierre Thomas NO = 35 rushing yards, eight catches, 77 receiving yards, two touchdowns
WR Demaryius Thomas DEN = Eight catches, 226 receiving yards, two touchdowns
WR Golden Tate DET = Seven catches, 134 receiving yards, one touchdown
WR Kendall Wright TEN = 43 rushing yards, six catches, 47 receiving yards, two touchdowns
TE Greg Olsen CAR = Six catches, 72 receiving yards, two touchdowns

The dominant underdog lineup of the week…

QB Austin Davis STL  = 375 passing yards, 30 rushing yards, three touchdowns
RB Branden Oliver SD =
114 rushing yards, four catches, 68 receiving yards, two touchdowns
RB Benny Cunningham STL = 47 rushing yards, three catches, 24 receiving yards, one touchdown
RB Antone Smith ATL =
Two rushing yards, three catches, 83 receiving yards, one touchdown
WR Travis Benjamin CLE
= Four catches, 48 receiving yards, two touchdowns
WR Justin Hunter TEN =
Three catches, 99 receiving yards, one touchdown
WR Kenny Britt STL
= Three catches, 68 receiving yards, one touchdown
TE Tim Wright NE =
Five catches, 85 receiving yards, one touchdown

The unexpectedly horrible lineup of the week…

QB Matt Stafford DET  = 221 passing yards, one touchdown, one INT
RB Lorenzo Taliaferro BAL = 18 rushing yards
RB Isaiah Crowell CLE = 19 rushing yards
RB Bishop Sankey = 27 rushing yards
WR Michael Floyd ARI = One catch, seven receiving yards
WR Calvin Johnson DET = One catch, seven receiving yards
WR Michael Crabtree SF = One catch, 16 receiving yards
TE Niles Paul WAS = One catch, six receiving yards

Gut Checks

I’d be worried if I owned Pierre Garcon. A year after being a PPR beast, his targets and receptions have been completely erratic and he doesn’t look to be nearly the fit in this offense as he was in the previous one.

I’d be worried if I owned Calvin Johnson. He’s one of the best receivers of all time, but the injuries are starting to be concerning.

I’d be worried if I was counting on Reggie Bush. Even when he seemingly has a prime opportunity, it’s a crapshoot.

I’d be worried if I owned Jason Witten. With Dallas running effectively, he’s not nearly needed as much.

I’d be worried if I wasn’t looking to sell Ben Tate before he gets hurt again.

I’d be worried if I didn’t think Travis Kelce was the next big thing at tight end.

I’d be worried if I was counting on Keenan Allen right now. Philip Rivers is on fire and Allen hasn’t been a huge part of it.

I’d be worried if I owned Markus Wheaton. The hype train is starting to slow down.

I’d be worried if I had Andre Johnson as my WR1. It’s not pretty right now.

I’d be worried if I didn’t believe Justin Forsett could be a viable option this year.

I’d be worried if I had Cordarrelle Patterson. Ugh, what’s going on?

I’d be worried if I owned Torrey Smith. Something is going on behind the scenes in Baltimore.

I’d be worried if I was counting on Jordan Cameron. A year after a huge breakout, his season has been a nightmare.

I’d be worried if I had Montee Ball. He’s in real danger of being “Wally Pipped.”

I’d be worried if I owned Toby Gerhart. It’s been an epic disaster in Jacksonville this season, culminating in a performance Sunday that featured nine rushing yards on four carries, one catch for 20 yards and Gerhart on the field for a grand total of ten snaps. It’s quite possible the coaching staff has already soured on him, opening the door for the likes of Storm Johnson and Denard Robinson to get more playing time at his expense. In short, it’s been ugly for Gerhart, who is averaging an anemic 2.6 yards per carry. I was very hesitant in anointing Gerhart as an asset this off-season and it looks like my hunch was right. As an analyst in this business, sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. We’re accountable for both.

A Look Ahead to Hot Names on the Week Six Waiver Wire

Remember, we focus on the lesser names here who we haven’t mentioned much this season, that’s why you won’t see players like Storm Johnson (we’ve covered him all Summer) or Branden Oliver (he was on the list last week, so let’s hope you snagged him).

  1. Juwan Thompson, RB DEN

CJ Anderson is likely owned in your league, but Thompson is worth a look as well. Montee Ball is on the shelf, leaving Ronnie Hillman with a prime opportunity. If he fails, someone else will surely step up.

  1. Tim Wright, TE NE

After failing to do much of anything so far as a Patriot, Wright finally posted a nice game and even scored in the New England rout this week. His production is likely going to be hard to predict, but the Pats had to have liked what they saw this week.

  1. George Winn, RB DET

Joique Bell is supposed to be back this week, but Winn was the last man standing this week with Reggie Bush failing to impress yet again. If Bell is cleared, he should likely stay stashed, but keep his name filed away.

  1. Robert Herron, WR TB

With Mike Evans out, Louis Murphy is getting some great playing time (he was on our list last week), but don’t forget about Herron.

  1. Adam Thielen, WR MIN

He’s quietly moving up the depth chart and even produced four catches for 57 yards this week. Leave it to Norv Turner to find a way to get Thielen the ball and leave Cordarrelle Patterson asking for it.

Fun with Numbers

Steven Jackson has two touchdowns on 72 touches this season. If Antone Smith (four touchdowns on 17 touches) had the same volume as Jackson and scored at the rate he has been this year, he’d have 17 touchdowns already this season. If he averaged the same amount per carry, he’d be up to 693 rushing yards as well. Now sure, that’s next to impossible, but what does the man have to do in order to get on the field?
