Waiver Wire Advice: Week Seven

Ken Kelly

We’ll be covering some of the hot names on the majority of dynasty league waiver wires each week for our premium content members.  These players will likely be owned in a minority of dynasty leagues. We won’t waste your time with bigger names who are likely owned in your league like Kenbrell Thompkins, or the likely one week wonders like Dallas Clark or Vonta Leach because you guys are just too good for that.  We’re simply going to cover some players who could be targets this week if you have an open roster spot and are willing to throw a dart with the hope of getting lucky.

Mainstream waiver wire articles will be posted all over the Internet this week begging people to pick up obvious players, but our job is to give you information to make informed and educated decisions and stay ahead of the curve, not on it.

Just remember one other very important thing – you’re in a dynasty league, not a re-draft league. Don’t get too enamored by the one hit wonders and drop your young projects in a quest to find lightning in a bottle. Savvy dynasty league owners will tell you the best players on the wire each and every year end up being the ones dropped by impatient owners, not the ones who suddenly break out. We won’t repeat many names here, so check out the list from prior weeks as we move along.

With that being said, here are this week’s picks in order of priority:

1.) Jarrett Boykin, WR GB

The Packers receiving corps has just been wiped out with injuries of late. With Randall Cobb now on the shelf for up to two month and James Jones nursing an injury of his own, it’s time for some others to step up and Boykin is at the top of the list of possibilities. The Packers attempted to sign Tavarres King of the Broncos practice squad, so they’re obviously concerned about the overall health of this group. Boykin has flashed before and should get a good chance to show what he can do now. Keep an eye on Myles White, who was promoted from the practice squad this afternoon as well.

2.) Timothy Wright, TE TB

Wright has very quietly posted two very solid weeks for the Bucs, including a seven catch, 91 yard performance on Sunday. He seems to have something going with new quarterback Mike Glennon and has now posted a total of 12 catches for 132 yards the past two weeks. An undrafted free agent tight end who is available in most dynasty leagues and shown potential while working his way up the depth chart in short order? Yes, please.

3.) Jeff Cumberland, TE NYJ

He may already be owned in your league and we’ve been hesitant in recommending him since he was splitting time with Kellen Winslow. However, with Winslow now suspended for PED use, Cumberland looks like a decent waiver wire and bye week fill-in option.

4.) Mario Manningham, WR SF

Lost in the hope of a Michael Crabtree return has overshadowed the potential of Manningham coming back and contributing as well. The 49ers are struggling to get anyone other than Vernon Davis open and Manningham would have a chance to contribute almost immediately.

5.) Case Keenum, QB HOU

I’m not exactly going all in and running to the wire for Keenum because I don’t believe he has much of a future in the NFL. However, the writing is on the wall with Matt Schaub and TJ Yates has not looked good and that’s putting it very nicely.
