The Dynasty Aftermath: Week Five

Welcome to DLF’s Dynasty Aftermath. This Tuesday staple is our longest running signature piece as we have a little fun after a tough week at the Dynasty League Football office. You’ll find this article will review the week’s happenings in a variety of ways and help set you up for the coming weeks as we spin around the league in the way we know best.

Let’s take a look back at the week that was!

Week Five Fantasy MVP

When can you throw for 506 yards, five touchdowns and just one interception and lose the game? When you play Peyton Manning, of course. Unfortunately, that was the fate of one Tony Romo who had a monster day en route to setting the all-time record for passing yards as a Dallas Cowboy with those 506 yards (no small feat, I must add). Romo will undoubtedly catch heat for throwing a costly interception at the end of the game that set up the Broncos for the winning field goal, but let’s face it, the Cowboys would have been blown out without Romo’s historic effort. On the day, Manning and Romo combined for a gaudy 920 passing yards and nine touchdowns as the two teams produced over 1,000 yards of total offense. This one will go down as one of the best shootouts in NFL regular season history. In fact, the 51-48 score represented the second highest scoring game since 1970.

Week Five Fantasy LVP

As good as Romo and Manning were, you could argue Matt Schaub was equally as bad. Coming off a horrible “pick six” that led to the Texans inexplicable loss to the Seahawks last week, Schaub starting off the day with another one that just started what would amount to a horrible night for Houston on the big Sunday night stage. Schaub went 19-for-35 for 173 yards and threw three interceptions before getting benched in favor of TJ Yates in the texans’ 34-3 blowout loss. To put it into perspective, Yates went 3-for5 for 15 yards and actually scored more fantasy points than Schaub in most leagues. If the Houston fans were burning his jersey outside the stadium last week, who knows what they’ll be doing when they wake up on Monday. For Schaub, this could very well be the beginning of the end. Doesn’t it now seem even more ridiculous the Texans didn’t at least make an effort to get Peyton Manning last season? The short window the Texans had to compete for a Super Bowl is closing quickly.

Lineup Fun

The unbeatable lineup of the week…

QB Tony Romo DAL = 506 passing yards, five touchdowns, one INT
RB Pierre Thomas NO = 36 rushing yards, nine catches, 55 receiving yards, two touchdowns
RB Knowshon Moreno DEN = 93 rushing yards, five catches, 57 receiving yards, one touchdown
RB Fred Jackson BUF = 53 rushing yards, four catches, 40 receiving yards, two touchdowns
WR Alshon Jeffery CHI = Ten catches, 218 receiving yards, one touchdown
WR TY Hilton IND = Five catches, 140 receiving yards, two touchdowns
WR Dez Bryant DAL = Six catches, 141 receiving yards, two touchdowns
TE Julius Thomas DEN = Nine catches, 122 receiving yards, two touchdowns

The dominant underdog lineup of the week…

QB Geno Smith NYJ= 199 passing yards, three touchdowns, 21 rushing yards and no turnovers
RB Andre Ellington ARI = 52 rushing yards, four catches, 31 receiving yards
RB Willis McGahee CLE = 72 rushing yards, one touchdown
RB Donald Brown IND = 37 rushing yards, two catches, three receiving yards, one touchdown
WR Terrance Williams DAL = Four catches, 151 receiving yards, one touchdown
WR Keenan Allen SD = Six catches, 115 receiving yards, one touchdown
WR Cole Beasley DAL = Four catches, 47 receiving yards, one touchdown
TE Brent Celek PHI = Three catches, 47 receiving yards, one touchdown

The unexpectedly horrible lineup of the week…

QB Tom Brady NE = 197 passing yards, one interception and no touchdown passes for the first time in over three years
RB Ryan Mathews SD = 8 rushing yards, one concussion
RB Lamar Miller MIA = 15 rushing yards
RB Trent Richardson IND = 56 rushing yards
WR Marques Colston NO = Two catches, 15 receiving yards
WR Stevie Johnson BUF = Two catches, 19 receiving yards
WR Anquan Boldin SF = Two catches, 21 receiving yards
TE Jordan Cameron CLE = Three catches, 36 receiving yards

Gut Checks

I’d be worried if I owned Trent Richardson. I’m going to keep him at the top of this list each and every week until he looks like something more than a volume runner. It’s early, but the Browns are starting to look pretty smart.

I’d be worried if I’m counting on Matt Schaub for anything the rest of the season.

I’d be worried if you didn’t take our advice and sell high on Michael Vick three weeks ago. We’ve seen this too many times before.

I’d be worried if I’m counting on any Buffalo players. With EJ Manuel out for a while, this offense is likely going to stall, regardless of who’s playing quarterback.

I’d be worried if I’m ignoring the fact Alshon Jeffery is becoming one really good wide receiver in fantasy and reality.

I’d be worried if I didn’t have a tight end named Jimmy Graham, Jason Witten, Jordan Cameron, Antonio Gates, Julius Thomas or Tony Gonzalez. This is shaping up to surprisingly become the year of the tight end, when many thought it was Jimmy Graham, then everyone else. We haven’t even seen Rob Gronkowski on the field yet, either.

I’d be worried if I own any Vikings quarterback other than Josh Freeman at the moment.

I’d be worried if I’m counting on Tom Brady as my QB1. He must look at the cast Peyton Manning has to work with and just spit fire. Manning has a legitimate weapon at every position while Brady has half his offense still in diapers.

I’d be worried if I owned AJ Green. He’s an uber-stud long-term, but Andy Dalton is holding him back big time right now.

I’d be worried if I’m ignoring how James Jones is continuing on as a legitimate weapon and showing last year wasn’t a total fluke.

I’d be worried if I’m starting any Detroit player on a day where Calvin Johnson sits. He makes everyone better when he plays, much like another Johnson by the name of “Magic.”

I’d be worried if I’m ignoring the fact TY Hilton is joining Jeffery as one of the best young receivers in the game.

I’d be worried if I own Lamar Miller. Sigh. Just when you think he’s turned a corner, we get a clunker. He’s still yet to have more than 69 yards rushing in a game – we expected him to have a few plays that long by now.

I’d be worried if I didn’t think that Super Bowl run by Joe Flacco was an anomaly – he’s still pretty much the same player you can’t rely on as much more than a fantasy backup.

I’d be worried if I’m underestimating how good Justin Blackmon could be with a decent quarterback.

I’d be worried if I owned MJD. Now it’s a trend.

I’d be worried if I thought Knowshon Moreno couldn’t hold off all the other Bronco running backs this entire season.

I’d be worried if I thought I had this Rams backfield all figured out now, but Zac Stacy did look better than anyone has as of yet.

I’d be worried if I expected any element of consistency this soon from young receivers like Justin Hunter.

I’d be worried if I owned Carson Palmer. He just looks like a shell of his old self and it’s starting to get a little sad.

I’d be worried if I think Rashard Mendenhall is going to hold off Andre Ellington much longer.

I’d be worried if I owned Miles Austin. The performance of Terrance Williams on Sunday may just prolong his recovery period.

I’d be worried if I expected that same type of game each week from Geno Smith, though that was a very good sign on Monday night.

I’d be worried if I have Colin Kaepernick as my QB1. Look, the talent is obvious and he’s going to get there eventually, but that’s four straight games where he’s thrown for 167 yards or less. Sure, he didn’t have to do much against the imploding Texans, but it’s still concerning. In fact, he had as many fantasy points in week one as he does in the last four weeks combined. We all need to remember he hasn’t played much and still needs to develop. While that happens, this passing offense is going to be inconsistent.

I’d be worried if I’m not noticing Keenan Allen is maturing pretty quickly.

I’d be worried if I’m ignoring the fact Terrelle Pryor seems to be improving each and every week.
