Waiver Wire Advice: Week Three

Ken Kelly

royal_fotorWe’ll be covering some of the hot names on the majority of dynasty league waiver wires each week for our premium content members.  These players will likely be owned in a minority of dynasty leagues. We won’t waste your time with bigger names who are likely owned in your league like Kenbrell Thompkins, or the likely one week wonders like Dallas Clark or Vonta  Leach because you guys are just too good for that.  We’re simply going to cover some players who could be targets this week if you have an open roster spot and are willing to throw a dart with the hope of getting lucky.

Mainstream waiver wire articles will be posted all over the Internet this week begging people to pick up obvious players, but our job is to give you information to make informed and educated decisions and stay ahead of the curve, not on it.

Just remember one other very important thing – you’re in a dynasty league, not a re-draft league. Don’t get too enamored by the one hit wonders and drop your young projects in a quest to find lightning in a bottle. Savvy dynasty league owners will tell you the best players on the wire each and every year end up being the ones dropped by impatient owners, not the ones who suddenly break out. We won’t repeat many names here, so check out the list from prior weeks as we move along.

With that being said, here are this week’s picks in order of priority:

1.) Eddie Royal, WR SD

We’ve been hesitant in mentioning Royal because we’ve seen these little bursts from him, but his three touchdown performance against the Eagles has everyone’s attention. While that will likely be his best game of the season, that was still pretty impressive. Perhaps the old Eddie from his rookie year in Denver is finally reappearing.

2.) James Starks, RB GB

Sigh.  We’ve had our hearts broken by Starks on more than one occasion, but he looked downright fantastic this week when he came in and subbed for the concussed Eddie Lacy. As a side note, Johnathan Franklin was nowhere to be found and that’s a major red flag. As for Starks, this likely won’t be some amazing career renaissance, but any starting running back (and he will be if Lacy is out long) is worth a roster spot.

3.) Mike Glennon, QB TB

If he’s still somehow on your league’s wavier wire, this is likely the last week he’ll be there. Time is running out on the Josh Freeman experiment in Tampa.

4.) Ace Sanders, WR JAX

We haven’t been as quick to jump on the Sanders bandwagon as others, but he has some real after the catch ability. The Jags are terrible, but that makes any stats a player puts up that much more impressive.

5.) Austin Pettis, WR STL

Trying to pick the right Rams receiver each week is next to impossible, but Pettis (much like Starks) looked as good as he has ever looked in his career.

6.) Ted Ginn, Jr., WR CAR

Take out the touchdown. The most important thing to note is he received eight targets en route to his three catch, 62-yard game this week. The Panthers have yet to have anyone stake their claim to be the sidekick to Steve Smith, so it’s noteworthy.

7.) Matt Simms, QB NYJ

Rex Ryan will undoubtedly do anything to save his job and a few more poor starts from Geno Smith may force his had. Simms makes for a decent stash in larger weeks until we see more consistency from Smith.

8.) Andre Ellington, RB ARI

He’s still most likely a third down back, but Rashard Mendenhall looks washed up and the Cardinals need to find something that works in the running game.

Last week’s suggestions:

  1. Terrelle Pryor, QB OAK
  2. Julian Edelman, WR NE
  3. Kellen Winslow, TE NYJ
  4. Jermaine Kearse, WR SEA
  5. LeGarrette Blount, RB NE
  6. Harry Douglas, WR ATL
  7. Alfonso Smith, RB ARI
  8. Charles Clay, TE MIA
