DLF’s Weekly Impact Events

broylesThe 2013 fantasy football off-season is in full swing and dynasty drafts are in progress. You have to pay close attention to everything in order to stay on top of your dynasty league. For most of us, we do well to steal some time away from our families and jobs to watch the games on Sunday. It becomes difficult to monitor the daily happenings around the league and even more demanding to process how that news affects your dynasty team.

That’s why we’re here!

Now that we’ve entered the off-season and have completed the NFL Draft, the next few months will be filled with rumors. Much of the “news” will be speculation about the futures of individual players. While this can be important, it can also be a challenge to determine the validity of certain reports. I will include many of these reports and share my opinion about how the player’s value might be affected, for better or worse.

Here is a quick look at the events of the past week and how they impact players on your team:

Vance McDonald, TE SF

Rookie tight end Vance McDonald was tabbed as one of the most impressive rookies at 49ers OTAs. Since he is seemingly stuck behind starter Vernon Davis, McDonald has gone mostly under the radar, but the 49ers will need all the pass catchers they can get and McDonald could see some early snaps in filling the Delanie Walker role, assuming he can improve his blocking skills. McDonald is an ideal target to stash in deeo dynasty leagues.

Ryan Broyles, WR DET

The Detroit Lions official website has reported that wide receiver Ryan Broyles is well ahead of schedule in his rehabilitation from a torn ACL during his rookie year. Broyles now expects to be ready for the team’s opening week and he is a great value in dynasty startup leagues, being taken as the 49th receiver as late as the thirteenth round. With veteran Nate Burleson the only real threat to Broyles’ playing time, expect him to see plenty of action once he proves he’s healthy.

Armon Binns, WR MIA

Reports out of Miami are that wide receiver Armon Binns could push Brandon Gibson for playing time. Both of these are names we seemingly hear each off-season, yet fail to live up to the hype when it counts. Neither has any significant dynasty value and even with winner of the job will fall behind Mike Wallace, Brian Hartline and Dustin Keller for passing down targets.

Kenbrell Thompkins, WR NE

One name that has emerged from the Patriots tumultuous off-season as a player to watch is undrafted rookie Kenbrell Thompkins. Thompkins is a big wide receiver from Cincinnati that could fill a role on the outside. After Danny Amendola, the Patriots wide receiver depth chart is wide open, filled with unproven rookies and uninspiring veterans. Thompkins is still a long shot to earn playing time, but he did garner first team reps during OTAs. He’s worth stashing in very deep leagues while we watch the camp battle play out.

Nick Foles, QB PHI

Beat writers out of Philadelphia consider quarterback Nick Foles the current favorite to win the job over veteran Michael Vick. This would come as a surprise to many who had tabbed Vick as the perfect quarterback for the Chip Kelly system. Vick and Foles received a spilt of first team snaps in OTAs. Despite who comes out ahead, it is hard to envision either having much long-term dynasty value. Vick is 33 years old and has had trouble staying healthy throughout his career and Foles lacks the upside to become a fantasy starter.

Ryan Tannehill, QB MIA

A good off-season for Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill just keeps getting better. The team has already added some help on offense, namely wide receivers Mike Wallace and Brandon Gibson and tight end Dustin Keller and recently, Tannehill has drawn praise from multiple members of the media. ESPN’s Chris Mortensen said that Tannehill had generated the most buzz of any quarterback in the league this off-season while Ron Jaworski expects Tannehill to show significant improvement in his second year in the league. Tannehill doesn’t have nearly the dynasty value of some of his fellow sophomore quarterbacks like Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III or Russell Wilson, but he does offer similar upside. Tannehill is an ideal backup quarterback in dynasty leagues with the potential to become a solid fantasy starter.
