Of these players, if you had the top pick in a rookie draft with no glaring needs to speak of, who would you take and why?

    Standard?
    PPR?

I believe you have to take Andrew Luck. He’s the class of the class and while he’s not a once in a lifetime player, he’s a once in a two-decade … at least. He’s got a skill set that is beyond anyone that I’ve seen at the position coming out, including Manning.

Blackmon is going to be a great possession receiver but I do have concerns about his speed in the NFL and wonder if he’ll have to work mostly across the middle. He doesn’t have the pure size or speed to be over the top.

Richardson is a great one at the position but RBs are not productive unto themselves, they need a lot of help. I don’t believe Richardson has that elite edge that allows him to create on his own like Peterson or L.T. (in his time) are/were able to. Not to mention that over the past decade, most first-off-the-board RBs have not been studs in fantasy.

Luck has the ability to be great for 15 years if he can stay healthy.

This year the top three are the top three in an order based on the fantasy needs of the team drafting … it’s a good year to be in the top three. 1. Luck 2. Richardson 3. Blackmon, in that order. My rankings in the top three won’t be changing unless Blackmon runs 4.6+ and Floyd runs closer to 4.40-4.45.

I agree with your grade on T. Rich don’t see him being on the level of AP, close but his big runs don’t wow me the way AP did in college. personally I never saw AP being on level as LT. 3 things LT better catching, ball security and avoiding contact.
Have picks 1.4,1.5,1.11,1.12 owner offered 1.1 & Julio jones for Calvin & 1.4 , if I believed t rich on level of ap would of jumped on this trade…. As it stands I declined unless other owner removes 1.4 from deal or gives 1.6

Combine is always fun! Great article

Great article thanks for the read!! I have the 1.3 and the 2.2 n 2.3. I’m desperate for a qb. If Luck gets taken 1st or 2cnd and Richardson is gone, should I take RG3rd over Blackmon? Depending on where he lands of course. Then i’m also hurting at rb but that’s a whole nother story. Any input is greatly appreciated.

i would take rg3 if you need qb help. blackmon will be a solid wr. but rg3 could be a huge factor. a little on the small size, but so is drew brees…..any arguement there?

  5. Greg G. says:

One of the things I look for when scouting players is that desire to be great. Anyone can have a year or two of dominance, get paid and then fade. The truly great ones are after more and its shows. Does Trent truly fall in that category? How about Luck and Blackmon? RGIII? Of these four, which two would worry you the most? Who seems to have the most drive? Thanks again for everyone commenting!

If you’re talking pure drive I do like RGIII. natural skill and ability goes to Luck. Best drive for a non first rounder is probably Russell Wilson of Wisconsin. Who do I worry about the most I’d say Blackmon only because I don’t know enough about his true drive .. and all the others are definitely driven. I think the top 4 here are all great players.

What do u think of fantasy potential of Jared Cook & Mikel LeShoure?

    • Sensai_John_Kreese says:

Cook has all the potential to be a top 5-10 tight end. Late in this past season, Munchak finally decided to start designing more plays for him, and he absolutely took advantage. I also have Celek and Rudolph, but i’m banking on Cook this year as my TE1. I may regret this. If nothing else, you can always hold him until the fantasy playoffs, he seems to blow up every year between weeks 14-17.

    • I like Cook but he just hasn’t shown any consistency yet. 2012 could be his year though. I wouldn’t draft him as my TE1 but he’s not far from …. and he has upside.

Leshoure’s injury is a big blow to a bigger back. I don’t expect he’ll ever be the same and I’m not sure that Detroit offense fits him. But he’s a good player, young and will have a chance to show. I think you’ll have to wait until 2013+ to know.

  7. Paul says:

Cook is pretty solid. He’s probably the second best passing option for the Titans and Locker probably will check down more just being young. The Titans are also likely to use draft picks on defense which should keep other options from his passes.

Leshore is capped by being in a pass first offense that can use Megatron to vulture some goal-line TD’s. Still with the other two options on their team he’s probably the best dynasty option of the three. Potential is still Ahmad Bradshaw on the high side though.

we do ours as bob says the day after the draft. each draft pick has 24 hrs to make his pick. i took ryan williams last year, and the guy ahead of me took mike leshore. mark ingram went no. 1.01. i like it that way cause you add the element of chance in the rookie draft too.

That makes no sense, but it’s your league. Why not wait until a week before the season to ensure the worst teams pick the players who aren’t hurt and look the best?

        • bob says:

Yeah, that would be nice. Would probably add value to our picks. And is probably one of the reasons why the worst teams never hold on to their picks long enough to use them. I guess it just adds another element of chance and surprise.

And I guess if you get to see all the preseason stuff it makes things almost makes it to easy… what use would all of this offseason research be?

Also, since there are 32 people in the league it takes several weeks to get through the draft, so at the very minimum we could go a month before the season starts. I didn’t write the rules, just follow them.

I have picks 1.6 and 1.7 in my upcoming dynasty draft and will likely be looking to take 2 rbs with my 2 picks due to my uncertainty at the position for 2012. I had AP, Jamaal Charles and Mendenhall all fall to injuries likely to carry over into 2012, leaving me only with a healthy MoJo Drew, D Brown and McCluster. I know Richardson will be gone for my picks and i’m assuming Lamar Miller as well. Am I the only one who is considering Chris Polk here?

    VA:F [1.9.17_1161]
    Rating: 0 (from 0 votes)
    • I think you might have a chance at both Doug Martin and Polk. Polk has been getting hammered recently and I think it’s going to present an opportunity for fantasy coaches in the 1.07 – 1.10 range. He’s got elite vision and he’s built perfectly. He’s not lazy as many have said and he’s great in the passing game. He won’t go before Martin, but he’s got a great chance to be a very good player later in the first.

    • adam says:

While I agree that Mendy may not have much (if any) value for 2012, and could very well be looking for a new home once his contract expires, I do think he has value for 2013 and beyond. He’ll only be 26 at this point and should have 2-4 productive years left, provided he finds a decent landing spot. If he does re-sign with the Steelers, I would guess he’ll be in a RBBC but still be a useful flex.
