Week Fourteen Waiver Wire Advice

Ken Kelly

We cover some of the hot names on the majority of dynasty league waiver wires each week for our premium content members.  These players will likely be owned in a great minority of dynasty leagues.  We won’t waste your time with bigger names who are likely owned in your league and also don’t cover names we’ve already mentioned in the past.

While most other sites are listing Jeremy Stewart or Greg McElroy as hot pickups this week, we’ve already mentioned them in the past and were ahead of the curve yet again.

We’re simply going to cover some players who could be targets this week if you have an open roster spot and are willing to throw a dart and hope to get lucky.

Just remember one very important thing – you’re in a dynasty league, not a re-draft league. Don’t get too enamored by the one hit wonders and drop your young projects in a quest to find lightning in a bottle. Savvy dynasty league owners will tell you the best players on the wire each and every year end up being the ones dropped by impatient owners, not the ones who suddenly break out. Again, we won’t repeat any names here, so check out the names we’ve already mentioned at the bottom of this list.

One caveat if you haven’t been following this column this season.  This is quite honestly the single worst season I can remember on the waiver wire. When you look at the laundry list of names, it’s not exactly an all-pro cast. There have been a few worthy picks (Cecil Shorts, Danario Alexander, Marcel Reece, Daryl Richardson, Andre Brown, Bryce Brown before the season, etc.), but not many players have emerged this year. It’s getting skinnier by the week and is actually down to ONE for this week’s edition, so remember to check out the long laundry list of prior suggestions at the bottom.  We’re simply not going to make a list full of non-worthy players just for fun – you guys are serious players, so we try not to waste your time.

With that being said, here is this week’s pick:

1. Mike Thomas, WR DET

It physically hurts to type this, but Ryan Broyles has torn his ACL in his right knee and is out for the year. Broyles faces another brutal off-season of rehab now and will likely start the season on the PUP list (though we do know he’s a quick healer). The only silver lining here is that this is NOT the same knee he tore up while playing at the University of Oklahoma and Broyles will also go into his rehab knowing he can play at a high level in the NFL. He’s worth saving on your roster and/or picking up if another owner drops him. It may be 2014 until you get something really substantial, but patience could pay off here.

As for Thomas, it certainly looks like he’s going to step into the WR2 role for Detroit since they have absolutely no desire to turn back to Titus Young, who is quickly looking like a total bust. Thomas could have some appeal, especially in PPR leagues.  We didn’t feel he was worthy at all until the Broyles injury, but now he is.  You could even make a case for Stefan Logan.
