DLF’s Weekly Impact Events

The 2012 National Football League season is in full swing. You have to pay close attention to everything in order to stay on top of your dynasty league. For most of us, we do well to steal some time away from our families and jobs to watch the games on Sunday. It becomes difficult to monitor the daily happenings around the league and even more demanding to process how that news affects your dynasty team.

That’s why we’re here!

Each week there are many news items that are important and helpful in the day-to-day managing of your fantasy team, yet have little affect on the dynasty value of players. Because of this, I will not be mentioning those here.

Here is a quick look at the events of the past week and how they impact the players on your team:

Fred Davis, TE WAS

Redskins starting tight end Fred Davis suffered a torn Achilles and will miss the remainder of the season. There is a large dynasty tier of tight ends with similar value, including Davis, so this will likely cause him to drop to the bottom of that tier. His value was already suffering as his role had diminished alongside rookie starting quarterback Robert Griffin III. Backup tight end Logan Paulsen played in Davis’ place after he exited the game and the team has re-signed veteran Chris Cooley. Neither offer much upside and should not be considered as strong fantasy options.

Josh Gordon, WR CLE

Browns rookie wide receiver Josh Gordon continued his breakout as he caught two passes for 59 yards and a touchdown. Gordon now has 240 receiving yards and four scores over the past three games and he established himself as the Browns top target ahead of a struggling Greg Little. The only concern about Gordon is that he only caught two of eight targets in week seven, following a two of ten catch performance in week five.

Randall Cobb, WR GB

Another wide receiver establishing himself as a weekly fantasy starter in the Packers Randall Cobb, who has excelled during starter Greg Jennings’ absence due to a groin injury. In Cobb’s last four games, he has caught 26 balls for 339 yards and three touchdowns – that already gives him more receptions and touchdowns than he had in his entire rookie season of 2011. With the expected departure of Jennings following the season, Cobb should continue to play a prominent role for the high scoring Green Bay offense. His dynasty value has increased as much as any player this season and he can now be considered a top twenty dynasty wide receiver.

Maurice Jones-Drew, RB JAX

The Jaguars best player, running back Maurice Jones-Drew, injured his foot in week seven and will miss a significant amount of time. It is a huge blow to Jacksonville and dynasty owners everywhere. As a 27 year old running back who could miss the remainder of the season if the injury is the dreaded Lisfranc variety, Jones-Drew’s dynasty value takes a huge hit. Rashad Jennings, who looked like a safe bet for production this preseason before MJD ended his holdout, will take over as the team’s starter. Jennings is a free agent and has the chance to earn a nice contract as the lead runner for at least the next three weeks, and likely longer.

Jeremy Kerley, WR NYJ

Jets wide receiver Jeremy Kerley has been the Jets top option the past couple of weeks and at only 23 years old is earning respect and future playing time with his impressive play. Kerley caught seven passes for 120 yards in week seven against the Patriots. With injuries to wide receiver Santonio Holmes and tight end Dustin Keller, Kerley has made the most of his chance. He is a great trade target for competing teams needing some depth down the stretch as well as building teams looking towards the future.

Nate Burleson, WR DET

Burleson, the Lions second wide receiver, broke his right leg in Monday night’s game against the Chicago Bears and will miss the remainder of the season. Dynasty owners can expect both Titus Young and Ryan Broyles to see an increased role in the struggling Lions’ offense. So far this year, Young has struggled with consistency and Broyles had seen little action, but both saw significant playing time and posted impressive numbers once Burleson was forced from the game.

Greg Jennings, WR GB

It was announced this week that star wide receiver Greg Jennings would undergo surgery to repair a sports hernia and would miss at least three more weeks. Jennings value has dropped this season as he’s dealt with the injury, along with the assumption that he will be with a new team next season. In his place, wide receivers James Jones and Randall Cobb have helped the Packers to not miss a beat. If you are a Jennings owner, you have to hold him for now and hope he can come back strong sometime this season and regain some of that once lofty dynasty value.
