Awesome article. Thanks for breaking the mold. Why don’t you buy into the Newton to the Bills hype?

They’ve been using their first round picks on skill position players and at some point they really need to start building the lines, both offensive and defensive. It’s not that they don’t need Newton, but in my mind there is enough talent at the QB position to wait until the 2nd round instead of reaching for Newton.

Buffalo is an odd market for a star type of player and weather conditions can by brutal as well. Newton’s arm would most likely be fine but I favor the arms of Kaepernick and Mallett more.

Their picking too high for LT this year, but there are some nice defensive line players that I think they need to focus on.

as a bills fan, i hope you are right, although i also hope that buddy nix just opts for best player available..Patrick Peterson, and then goes with Kaepernick in round two. Excellent article, guys

I like the breakdown. I also don’t buy into the Newton to Bills talk. I can see him falling.

    nice column.
i’m excited cuz i have the 2nd & 3rd picks in my draft so no matter what happens with the 1st pick i will get 2 out of the Ingram/Green/Jones threesome.

So many of the QBs in this draft can be lumped together, with any one of them being either a boom or a bust. Mallett/Kaepernick/Locker are very similar in potential and strengths/weaknesses. So teams will be able to wait until Round 2 or maybe even 3 to pick one of them up. And quality RBBC RBs will be picked up as UDFAs this year.

I love the way you laid this out. I find myself sifting through mock drafts looking for skill position players most of the time anyway. I also love the three options: Next Likely, No Later and Surprise. Excellent article!

That was my catalyst for doing it this way … I was tired of the same ol’ process of looking at mocks for skill positions. And this allowed me to spend more time and more players and positions.

      Glad you enjoyed it.

    Enjoyed the article.

Would love a little recap at the end showing the relative values of each player based on where they end up, or something like that.

For example, Green to the Browns concerns me. They need a WR1 and he will have opportunity, but I don’t trust that offense. Are there ideal landing spots and worst-case landing spots to consider come draft time?

I actually view Green to the Browns more positively than to the Bengals. Holmgren will be putting the WCO in place for the Browns and Green would be going in to play the main WR role. I like McCoy enough that I think he can be effective in a short passing offense.

The Bengals on the other hand have so many questions at this point that I’d be more concerned if Green went there.

In general, I don’t worry about where RB & WRs at the very top of the draft go, they are so talented they tend to produce no matter what. It’s the 2nd tier where I start to consider team as an important factor.

Good point about the Browns v. Bengals. I guess that does make me feel better.

I guess the implementation of what I suggested would be to list the ideal fantasy spots in general, not for each player– like STL would be great for a WR, MIA for a RB, etc. Something like that?

Still appreciate the article, I love reading anything about the draft this time of year.

If anyone takes Mallot, Newton or any other QB before Blaine Gabbert is gonna be a loser. Without Luck coming out this year, Gabbert is clearly the class of Quarterbacks coming out this year.

That’s far too “asbolute” of a statement for me, but I understand what you’re saying. I was really disappointed to see Luck not come out and then combined with Floyd and Blackmon staying in school, half of the value of the draft was gone.
