Weekend Huddle: Week Two

Ken Kelly

sundaymorninghuddle2

It’s time for the week two edition of the Weekend Huddle where the answers to your lineup questions are revealed. You’ll notice two unique changes this week.

First, due to the overwhelming number of entries, we’re posting this on Saturday instead of Sunday to allow you some more time to sift through all the different questions and answers.

Second, many questions will have the opinions of not just one, but all three of the co-owners of DLF. This change is designed to give you an idea of how tough or easy your question may be and give you some different perspectives to guide you towards a final decision.

Other sites usually go back and forth and beat around the bush with their answers, but we won’t. You want advice, and we’re going to give it to you. Will we be wrong sometimes? You bet! Will we be right more often that not? We sure hope so.

Question:
For my third receiver spot, should I go with Eddie Royal, Michael Crabtree or T.O. Then at number 2 running back, Ronnie Brown, Matt Forte or the man of the week Brandon Jackson?

Answers:

Ken M: Definitely take a shot at Jackson vs. Buffalo.  Neither Royal nor Crabtree is terribly exciting, but I’d probably go with Crabs just because I think he and the SF offense will turn it around a bit, and I think he has a much higher ceiling this week than Royal.

Jeff: Would love to recommend T.O. here, but I can’t.   BAL “D” is just too tough and CIN has too many options at WR to pick one against BAL.  49ers will be throwing a ton vs. N.O. and Crabtree is your best bet!  Forte is coming off a monster game, but won’t put up similar numbers.  Jackson at home vs. a Poz-less BUF “D” is your play.

Ken K: I’m going to go against the grain a little here, but I actually think Owens and Jackson are your best bets. I don’t trust Crabtree until he gains back the respect of his team and Jackson’s play against Buffalo looks great on paper.

Question:
Which WR should I start Lee Evans or Jabar Gaffney? Also who should I start as my 2nd RB? Spiller, Hightower or Wells?

Answers:

Ken M: Gaffney is the way to go, should have a much better day than Evans.  Wells is still too uncertain.  If you want to take a chance on upside, go with Spiller.  If you want more predictable production, go with Hightower.

Jeff: Gaffney is your choice.  Evans is the only WR threat and will be doubled all day.  Don’t like Spiller against the Pack at all.  Go with the Hightower for one more week … good PPR play too.

Ken K: Gaffney and Hightower for sure. I don’t trust any Bills player right now.

Question:
Please pick 2 to start: Jonathan Stewart, Ahmad Bradshaw, Brandon Jackson, Thomas Jones… thanks!

Answers:

Ken M: Jackson and Bradshaw.

Jeff: Jackson is a lock for your first play.  Want to say Stewart over Bradshaw as the Panthers will return to the running game this week.  But the PPR aspect and Matt Moore’s poor play means you start Bradshaw until Stewart shows up.

Ken K: I like Jackson and Bradshaw as well, but I think Bradshaw is the clear lock there. The Colts defense made Arian Foster look like Barry Sanders last week. Jackson has a good matchup, but Bradshaw is the more talented player.

Which one of these pairs would you start Arian Foster/Ray Rice or Arian Foster/Deangelo Williams or Ray Rice/Deangelo Williams?

Answers:

Ken M: Foster/Rice

Question:
I need to play two WR? Do I sit Randy Moss this weekend against Beavis Revis?  I will of course start Reggie Wayne. I could go with Malcom Floyd or Steve Breaston.

Answers:

Ken M: Play Wayne and Moss.

Jeff: Wayne starts obviously.  I’m sitting Moss myself this week for Brandon Jackson in my main league.  But you can’t sit Moss for those other two.  Moss starts!

Ken K: I want to say Steve Breaston over Moss, but you can’t do it. I expect the Patriots to make a statement in New York this week.

Question:
I just picked up Brandon Jackson. I also have Matt Forte, Knowshon Moreno, and Cedric Benson. I like Jackson’s match-up against the Bills. I can only have two in my starting lineup. Which of the other three backs do I start?

Answers:

Ken M: Definitely Forte and Jackson.

Jeff: Forte without a thought.  Bad matchup vs. Benson although he typically has good days vs. BAL.  Sit Moreno for sure as well.

Ken K: I’m on the same line as these two with Jackson and Forte as your two for this week.

Question:
Best starting lineup for the following (need 1 QB, 2 RBs, 2 WR, TE, and WR/RB)

1) Kyle Orton or Matt Ryan
2) Mendenhall, Greene, J. Charles, Spiller
3) Colston, Gaffney, Mike Williams (TB), M. Wallace (Pit), Berrian
4) J. Finley and D. Keller (Gonna start Finley at TE, obviously)

Answers:

Ken M: Awfully close on the QB’s, but I’d probably go Orton over Ryan as I think ATL will run more.  Greene looks to be splitting time with LT, though he’s still going to be a viable starter.  Until BUF gets its act together and shows us something, I’d be wary of Spiller.  So go with Mendy and Charles.  Colston and Gaffney.  And yes, Finley.

Jeff: Ryan.  Mendenhall and Charles.  Colston and Gaffney.  Finley, of course.

Ken K: I’m with Jeff on Matt Ryan against the Cardinals instead of Orton against Seattle. Mendenhall and Charles are the two RBs for sure. I’m going to suggest Colston and Mike Williams (TB). I like Gaffney, but I have a feeling on Williams this week.

Question:
Need a flex, options are R Brown, R Bush, M Crabtree or M Williams (TB).  What do you think?

Answers:

Jeff: Non PPR sends me to the RBs on this decision although I do like Williams this week.  Vikes have a tough run D.  I play Bush, absolutely solid on that pick if you also get return yardage.  Without return yardage, it’s a toss up but I still play Bush.

Ken M: Close call between Bush and Brown, I’d probably go with Brown.

Ken K: In a non-PPR league, I think Ronnie Brown is still the choice, even against Minnesota.

Question:
Should I start L.Naanee or Mark Clayton over Mike Sims-Walker this week? A little background, I won my matchup last week, so I’m not panicking, and other WR’s are Austin, and Ward – I start 3 WR’s.

Answers:

Jeff: I like Naanee at home.  Clayton is on the map now and will be shut down.  Not a Sims-Walker fan at all.  All are clear WR3s in my book.

Ken M: I’m not wild about MSW.  Clayton had a great start but something tells me STL will be running on OAK, I’d go with a fired up Chargers team at home, and start Naanee.

Ken K: I’ll be on an island here, but I think Clayton is the easy start this week. He may be covered by Nnamdi, but I’d rather have a guy who seems to be his team’s best passing game option here.

Question:
What do you make of Crabtree’s situation thus far? What kind of WRs would you start over him at the moment?

Answers:

Jeff: Crabtree is a “show me” WR now.  Don’t like his attitude, not wild about his QB and he hasn’t shown anything to be excited about.  He’s a WR3 at best in my book until he produces.

Ken M: I think he’s got some great upside.  Too bad he’s saddled with Smith at QB. I’d start quite a few over him, depends on who and situation.

Ken K: He’s clearly a low-end WR2 at best right now, with probably twenty or so receivers being easy starts ahead of him right now. He’s also a buy low option in dynasty leagues, as I think he’ll eventually turn things around.

Question:
16 team, .5 pts per reception, 6 all tds. I own Randy Moss. Jets incoming .Do I even consider starting Legedu Naanee or Mike Williams (Seattle) over Moss?  It just sounds nuts, but Revis Island is lurking…

Also I need one for my flex. Jerome Harrison, Ricky Williams, Justin Forsett, or Brandon Jackson.  I’m leaning towards Jackson.

Answers:

Jeff: Jackson is a lock for your flex.  I hear you about Revis island but can’t suggest starting a WR3 (they still are) over Moss here.

Ken M: Never bench your studs. It will pay off over the long haul. Revis may put some hurt on Moss this week, but you don’t want to play too much of a guessing game with your studs each week.  Especially after the clinic NE put on last week. Start him.  And definitely start Jackson as well.

Ken K: Can’t put it any better. Moss and Jackson here.

From: Jason Hillner
I am playing a usually high scoring team this week, so at my flex position, I need the most upside as opposed to the safest play; Finley, Caddy, Barber III or Hightower?

Answers:

Jeff:  PPR?  Caddy against TB is probably your play, guaranteed touches and young WRs.  Finley is intriguing if it’s PPR for a big week, but GB could be up big against BUF early and the Packers will work the clock on the ground.  Go with Caddy.

Ken M: Caddy’s a good choice here, but if it’s a PPR league, I’d probably take a chance on Finley, especially if it’s a 1.5 PPR for TE’s.

Ken K: If you just want the best upside, you have to take a RB, and Williams is your guy.

Tom Brady against the Jets D or Mike Vick against the Lions? 6pts per TD pass.

Answers:

Jeff: This is the toughest one yet.  In two games last year, Brady averaged about 12 points with 6 per TD.  Vick is starting and I would consider benching Brady for Vick this week.  If that fails, ready my “Resolutions” article and flame me!

Ken M: I’m differing with Jeff here and giving him a  dose of his own advice… stick with the hot, proven hand.  Part of the reason Vick was so sucessful last week is that GB didn’t game plan for him,  and he brought an entirely different style of play than Kolb.  If Vick is the starter there, and it looks like he will be, then DET will game plan for him, and he won’t be nearly as successful.  Take a deep breath, start Brady, and hope for the best!

Ken K: It’s a really tough call, but I don’t bench Brady for anyone not named Manning, Rodgers, or Brees.

Ken K: Rice and Foster. No brainer.

I have Favre, Palmer, and just picked up Vick.  Start Vick try get something valuable for Favre?

Answers:

Jeff: Start Vick.  Vikings have no rhythm yet.  Not yet on Palmer.

Ken M: Definitely not Palmer vs BAL. I’m pretty leery of Favre.  So while I’m not wild about Vick, I think he’s the best option there.

Ken K: Until the Vikings get their offense on track, Favre isn’t a top option. I’d take Vick here and cross my fingers.

From: Anonymous

I’m a little scared starting Mike Sims-Walker again. I can’t take another goose egg. Do I bench him in favor of Legedu Naanee? I have Moss and Wayne as my other two WRs.

Jeff: It’s too early yet to worry about another loss, but it’s never fun to start 0-2.  I’m not a Sims-Walker fan myself, I’d start Naanee, but it’s a toss up who will have the better game.

Ken K: Mike Thomas seems to be establishing himself as a good option for the Jags. I’d take Naanee over Sims-Walker this week.

Answers:

Question:
I have quite a quagmire here. Should I start Cedric Benson vs. Baltimore, or should I start Shonn Greene Vs The Patriots. Greene got virtually nothing but cough-ups against Bal, and New England is ranked 9th in rush-D.  Benson found paydirt late in last week’s Game but did Manage 43yds Vs the Pats, who are ranked higher in rush D than the 17th ranked Ravens. Both offenses looked pretty sad, what do I do here?

Answers:

Jeff: Tough choice indeed but I give the nod to Benson.  Benson somehow does some of his best work against BAL.  Greene is sharing carries and L.T. is likely to get more of them.  Benson is also slightly better in PPR, but not much.

Ken M: That is a close call but I’d go with Benson.  Until he gets hurt (and he will), he’s a solid play, even against a tough Bal D.

Question:
Should I start: Payton Hillis vs. KC, Jonathan Stewart vs. TB, or Cedric Benson vs. BAL in my RB 2 spot.

Also should I start any of those 3, Jacoby Jones vs. Was, Pierre Garcon vs. NYG, or Steve Breaston vs. ATL in my Flex spot.

ESPN is telling me to start Hillis (at 15 points) and Jones (at 13 points), I have faith in Jones, but I think I have more faith in J. Stewart or Benson than Hillis.

Thanks for the help

Answers:

Jeff: I like Stewart for your RB2, Benson if you have a gut feeling.  Not a chance for Hillis, not in my mind at least.  Wouldn’t touch Jones here either.  Go with Garcon or Breaston, I prefer Garcon as long as he’s healthy.

Ken M: I’d go Benson, even against that tough D.  Stewart is way more dynamic, but until we know for sure he gets more carries than he is now, is production is just too uncertain.  Benson may not get a lot of yards, but he’ll probably cross the goal line in that game, and he’s certainly get most of the carries.  Garcon is your best bet of the WR’s.

Ken K: I’d rank them in this order: Benson, Garcon, Stewart, Breaston, Hillis, Jones.

Question:
Pretty much the same problem as Dan with RBs: Rashard Mendenhall (@ TEN), Brandon Jackson (v. BUF), or Darren McFadden (v. StL)?

Thanks!

Jeff: Tough choice but I favor Jackson is a matchup that should find GB up by a ton and running a lot.  Mendenhall is not a stud by my definition and TEN is traditionally relatively tough against the run.  DMc has a juicy matchup is a bigger risk, but with a bigger potential reward.  I’d play Jackson unless you need a big game, in which case go with McFadden for one more week.

Ken K: I’d actually go with Mendenhall. The Packers throw a ton and the Steelers are going to need to rely on the run with Dixon at the helm.

Passing, Rushing TDs are 6 points each.

Fumbles and Ints are -2 points each.

Jeff: I think Vick’s rushing yards are too much to pass up this week.  I may actually sit Favre in my main league myself.  This is a tough choice but I roll the dice with Vick.  If Favre had looked better last week, I’d roll with Favre.  But he didn’t.

Answers

Jeff: With no PPR you need yards and TDs.  You have to roll with Calvin and Nicks.  Steve Smith is intriguing, but I’m not fond of Moore.  Your team is stacked, nice job … and congrats on the championship!  Ray Rice and Foster are your easy two choices this week.  For your flex, I’m going to mix it up and say to roll with Thomas @ Niners.  Forte’ has been horrid in short yardage again and Taylor is likely to pick up goal line duties.  If this was PPR, I’d say Forte‘.

Ken M: Johnson and Smith at the WR spots, Rice and Foster at RB, Thomas at the Flex.  Thats a damn nice roster, buddy.

Ken K: I’d hate to see the rosters of your opponents in this league. Ouch. Rice, Foster, Thomas, Smith, and Calvin are your choices. I just don’t like putting players who play late who aren’t 100%. That takes Nicks out for me.

I am in a standard scoring league where TD’s are 6 pts but here’s the rub, WR’s don’t get points (5) until a combined (Ru+Re) 80 yards, then it’s 1 pt. per every 10 yds.  TE’s get 7 points at 60 yds, then 1 pt. ever 10 yds.

We can start any combination of three receivers (WR or TE). I have these choices, Colston, Andre Johnson, Maclin, and Shiancoe.

I would think Johnson and Colston are no brainers… the question is between Maclin and Shiancoe, and I have Vick starting this week?

What do you think?

Answers

Jeff: I like Shiancoe this week.  He’s a tough start over Maclin though.  It’s a bit of a toss-up but I think you have to stick with Maclin.

Ken K: I learned years ago not to trust Vick’s arm. I don’t think prison has changed that much, so I’d go with Shiancoe. He was easily Favre’s favorite target last week.

I need to start 1 of the following RBs:

Greene vs NE

McFadden vs StL

Caddy @ Car

Answers:

Jeff: Love the Caddy matchup but you have to play the hot hand.  DMc will be looking to build upon a nice first week.  Start him against a suspect STL defense.

Ken K: I rank them Caddy, McFadden, Greene.  Who would have thought that last week?

I have the following receivers, and I was curious as to who would I should start at the #3 WR spot. I am starting Jacoby Jones and Wes Welker.

Devery Henderson
Devone Bess
Mike Williams (SEA)
Brandon Lloyd

Answers:

Jeff: Henderson is feast or famine and if you need a big week, he’s a good WR3 play.  But I’d go with the Williams this week.  PPR does make Bess an interesting selection but Williams looked pretty good in week 1.  Start him and hope for the best.

Ken K: Call me crazy, but I actually think Williams, Welker and Bess are your best three.

Need some help picking which four WRs to start this week. Was planning on Megatron, D-Jax, Jennings, and Dez. I also have Bowe, Garcon, MSW, and TB Williams. Should I be concerned about Calvin with Stafford out? Is Dez a better start then my other guys? I can also start Gresham? Thanks!

Answers

Jeff: Nope, you’re fine with your plan.  The only question is Dez or Williams and I’d go with Dez.  Want to see one more week of Williams.  Dez is good either way in a PPR.

Ken K: I agree. You SHOULD be concerned about Calvin, but not enough to bench him.

Question:

1/2 PPR, 22 roster spot dynasty. You guys are geniuses. So glad I found this site…

1. Pick two of Rashard Mendenhall, Ryan Mathews, Ahmad Bradshaw or Jonathan Stewart.
2. Pick two of Caddy Williams, LeSean McCoy, Addai, Pierre Thomas and Brandon Jackson
3. Pick one of Mike Williams (TB), Massaquoi, or Louis Murphy
4. Pick two of Mike Williams (TB), Johnny Knox, Dwayne Bowe, Legedu Naanee, Dez Bryant, Mike Thomas
5. Pick one of Eli Manning or Matt Ryan

Answers:

Jeff: Glad you love the site, tell others, visit our sponsors!

1.  Tough choice.    I’ll get flamed for this but I start Mathews and Bradshaw who plays on Sunday night, 1/2 PPR makes him attractive.  Stewart could be good this week but I’d want the guaranteed touches that Bradshaw will get.  Mendy is a tough sit but I’d roll the dice.  Mathews is a lock.

2.  McCoy and Jackson.

3.  Mike Williams as the easy choice.

4.  Mike Williams and Bryant.  Bryant/Bowe/Naane are all VERY close.

5.  Eli on Sunday night!

Ken M: No, we’re not, but we do play some on TV.

1. Mendy, Matthews

2. McCoy & Jackson

3. Mike TB Williams

4. Definitely Bryant and Williams.

5. Ryan

Ken K:

1. Mathews and Bradshaw

2. McCoy and Jackson

3. Mike Williams

4. Bryant and Mike Thomas

5. Eli Manning in a shootout

Start which two RB’s in PPR league? Ryan Mathews, Piere Thomas, Brandon Jackson, or LaDanian Tomlinson. I’m thinking Jackson and Thomas. Thoughts?

Answers

Jeff:  Ryan Mathews and Jackson.

Ken M: Normally I’d say Mathews and Thomas.  but even not being much of a Jackson fan, he should get the other start opposite Matthews this week.  Indy is just too tasty an opponent.

Ken K: I think you go take Mathews and Thomas. Jackson has a great matchup, but the Saints offense is just as explosive and not so dependent on the pass.

From Al:

Three questions for a 2WR/2RB/1flex league:

1) WR1 is Brandon Marshall. Do I start Johnny Knox, Malcolm Floyd or Mike Williams (SEA) as my second? I am gravitating towards Floyd due to match-up

2) Chris Johnson and Matt Forte are my RBs. Should I play Jahvid Best / Fred Taylor as my flex? OR should I play another WR from above?

3) Chris Cooley or Jermichael Finley as TE?

For my other league that also gives points for punt return yardage & TDs, I am thinking of starting Brandon Tate over Sims-Walker and Johnny Knox.

Rationale is that I think that besides returns he has a shot as WR3 with Jets focused on Welker and Moss. What do you think?

Answers:

Jeff: 1)  Floyd would be my third choice but I’d go with your gut if you have that feeling.  If it’s me, I probably start Knox against a suspect Dallas secondary, but he’s playing in Big D.  2)  Best.  3)  Finley hands down!

Ken M: 1) I’d go Floyd as I believe he will have a very good day.  Had a bunch of targets last week but a bad game in terrible conditions.  He’ll definitely bounce back this week.  2) Jahvid has the Best upside there (see what I did there??)  3) Finley, not even close.

Ken K: Floyd, Finley, and Best there. For the second question, I’d still take Knox.  I think you may be overthinking it with Tate.  How many times will the Jets score?  That offense is awful.

I got a bunch of options here to fill 3 spots. 2 RB Spots I have to choose between Moreno, Greene, Stewart and M.Bush. Then for my flex I have the above RB’s as well as Dez Bryant and Bowe. So who should I go with?

Thanks

Another Question:

Do I go with Keller or Scaife at TE this week and M.Bush, L.Robinson, L.Murphy or B.Hartline for my flex spot.

Thanks once again

Answers

Jeff:   Have to go with Moreno and Stewart, although I’m not wild about any of them.  Non PPR makes these tough choices, for the flex I probably go with Greene and hope for goal line opportunities.

Ken K: Moreno is an easy choice and I’d probably go with Stewart over Greene as well. Greene’s value is probably the most in flux of any running back right now. I’d take Keller over Scaife and go with Murphy for your flex. Those ones are all “cross your fingers and hope” plays there. No sure things on the board.

Question:

I have a bunch of uninspiring options from which to choose this week.  I need to choose two WRs from among Hakeem Nicks (he’d be automatic if not for ankle issues), Dwayne Bowe, Dez Bryant and Malcom Floyd.

I also need a flex player.  All of the above are under consideration, as are Jerome Harrison, Marion Barber and Chad Henne (yes, we can play QBs at flex).

Scoring system:
1 pt for every 15 yds rushing
1 pt for every 15 yds receiving
1 pt for every 35 yds passing
1 pt for every 3 receptions
6 pts for TDs, 4 pts for TD passes
-1 pt for INTs or fumbles lost

I’m seeing a lot of coin flips here.  Thanks for your input.

Answers

Jeff: Nicks and Bryant.  Nicks has to be in your lineup and he’ll be starting.  Bryant is good in PPR.  Have to start Henne since you can start a second QB.  If you are against Henne, play Bowe.

Ken K: I’m still not 100% that Nicks is in, so that makes it tough. I’d go Bryant and Floyd to play it safe. Always take a QB for the second flex spot. Foolish not to, really.
