Not in the Cards

Charles Scott was a popular selection in the late rounds of many rookie drafts this Summer. His trade from Philadelphia to Arizona today is the final straw for his diminishing value.

This former LSU Tiger had an up and down collegiate career, highlighted by his 1,174 yard campaign in 2008. At 6’1″ and 235 pounds, he entered the league as a bruising running back with potential for short yardage and goal line work at the least.

Many dynasty league owners were excited when Scott fell to the Eagles in the sixth round of the draft, due in part to a failed Senior Bowl physical due to collarbone issues. That excitement grew as he quickly impressed in OTAs.

Unfortunately, his strong play just didn’t last.

Scott was recently moved to fullback and had only one carry the entire preseason. The Eagles had hoped he would evolve into the “thunder” to LeSean McCoy’s “lightning,” but that just wasn’t happening.

The Eagles traded him this morning to the Arizona Cardinals in exchange for rookie CB Jorrick Calvin.

Before you get too excited about Scott eating into the workload of Tim Hightower or Beanie Wells, consider the Cardinals recently lost their current fullback, Nehemiah Broughton, to an ACL injury.

When you put two and two together, you have to figure Scott is headed for a blocking role in Arizona.

Even if he wasn’t to remain at fullback, he’s no better than a third team tailback on a team rich with backfield talent. That’s just not enough to merit a roster spot in even the deepest of dynasty leagues.

Late round rookie picks are always a gamble. At least we know this one’s fate early on.
