With a day still to go (and many players yet to land), here’s my initial top 10 list for a dynasty rookie draft.
1. Ryan Mathews RB SD
Mathews is going to counted on to be a workhorse in a high powered offense. That’s a nice combination.
2. Dez Bryant WR DAL
Was there a better place for him to fall? If he was ever going to fulfill his massive potential, this would be the place to do it. He’s close to home and close to Deion.
What could possibly go wrong?
3. CJ Spiller RB BUF
Lynch’s days have to be numbered and Fred Jackson is actually getting pretty old. Spiller is incredibly dynamic and can hurt teams in a lot of ways. Many people have compared him to Chris Johnson and others to Reggie Bush. I see him somewhere in between.
4. Jahvid Best RB DET
I could make an argument that Best has more talent than any other RB in this year’s class. I could also make an argument he’ll have the shortest career. At #4, he’s worth the risk.
5. Ben Tate RB HOU
I don’t think Slaton is out of the picture yet, but it’s clear they don’t have the faith in him to be a full-time ball carrier. I think Foster could have a role as well, but he doesn’t hold a candle to Tate’s ability and if he did, he’d probably fumble it.
6. Demaryius Thomas WR DEN
He landed in a perfect spot in Denver. I just hope he isn’t asked to do too much too soon. He is very unpolished and they’ll need to be patient with him. If you take him, don’t expect dominance in year one.
7. Montario Hardesty RB CLE
Jerome Harrison was on pace for about 1,000 carries in a year the way they used him the last month of the year, so the Browns really needed a bigger back. I like Hardesty a lot, but I don’t love those knees so much.
8. Sam Bradford QB STL
Here’s another player you’ll need to be patient with. I fully expect Clausen to have a better rookie year because of the talent he’ll have. Bradford has next to nothing outside of Steven Jackson. If he can stay upright in year one, that’s a victory. He has all the tools to be great, though.
9. Jimmy Clausen QB CAR
Tough to wait that long, but Matt Moore is no John Elway. I could see Clausen starting early and it’s an offense he’s fairly familiar with already. You think Sam Bradford would like to have Steve Smith, DeAngelo Williams, and Jonathan Stewart on his team?
10. Jermaine Gresham TE CIN
I expect Gresham to be bumped off this list tomorrow when another back like Dwyer goes to a good spot (NE, SEA), but he’s a solid prospect.
