Ted Ginn Jr. was just traded to the 49ers in exchange for a late round pick in 2010. This expected move ends a stint in Miami that was pretty disappointing for the former Buckeye. Many teams felt the Dolphins reached for Ginn in the top 10 of the draft and this move is a clear indication they agree it was an error in judgment. The acquisition of Brandon Marshall, along with having a decent group of WRs left Ginn in a spot where he was more of a distraction than anything else. A new opportunity will do him some good and there weren’t too many places as good as SF for his services.

This move allows Ginn to resurrect his career to a certain extent. He’ll be used primarily as a return man and as a situational deep threat most likely, however, Josh Morgan has been fairly inconsistent, so it’s conceivable that he could eventually push Morgan. If someone in your league is clamoring over Ginn and thinking he’ll retake Morgan immediately, I’d be taking advantage of that and trading Ginn by this afternoon before the dust settles.
Josh Morgan WR SF
I don’t see the acquisition of Ginn affecting Morgan too much. He’ll likely no longer work on special teams, but that should bode well for his development. Morgan was a dynasty darling two preseasons ago and has flashed some potential. The staph infection stunted his growth to a certain extent, but he should be in for a make or break season in 2010. I’d hold tight if you’re a Morgan fan.
Alex Smith QB SF
I don’t think this really does much for Smith. He’ll have a good deep threat now, but it seems like every deep out turns into a Vernon Davis shot on the seam anyway.
Jason Hill WR SF
He’s been a deep sleeper for some time, now he’s on permanent NyQuil.
Greg Camarillo WR MIA
This solidifies Camarillo’s spot in the Miami rotation. I still see him as a slot guy and a good deep PPR player.
Davone Bess WR MIA
This should help Bess as well. The Hawaii product should feel comfortable now that one more competitor for playing time has been shipped away.
Brian Hartline WR MIA
This move certainly doesn’t stunt his growth, either. I believe Hartline or Bess should develop into a pretty good WR2 eventually. Problem is, do you really want 2 spots on your roster hoping to develop the #2 option in Miami?
The Draft
The 49ers will likely pass on Dez Bryant if he falls to them in the draft – I believe they would have done that before the trade, though. Having Ginn, Morgan, Hill and Crabtree to go along with Davis gives the 49ers quite a bit of flexibility. They have two #1s and have actually put themselves into a position to take the best player available approach. If Jimmy Clausen is there, I wouldn’t be shocked to see him go there. I also think CJ Spiller would be a good fit, though he seems to be moving into the top 10 on draft boards now. If they can’t get Spiller, they could take Dexter McCluster later in the draft instead if they believed in his ability as a 3rd down back…though his return ability likely wouldn’t be needed with Ginn around.
From Miami’s perspective, this really doesn’t change much. They had a logjam at WR and this frees up some roster space for them. They weren’t looking for WR anyway, and they won’t now that Ginn is gone, either. They may look for a return man late, but that’s likely it unless someone really tumbles to them.
